Sounds like an interesting project, I might want to pick one up when they're made. Any way to add a ruler in both metric and imperial?

Unfortunately I dont really have any way to print onto the metal or anything.  I could, however, simply scribe in some measurements, such as a scale with 1/8" incriments on one side and some form of metric on the other.

That would do, and should last longer. GL and can't wait for pic.

I might be able to make it with a big enough wrench for 15mm, but that will be close to the maximum size that will work.  Anything bigger than that would probably be useless in a tool this small anyway.

yep,it doesnt have to be any larger i think,if id get a word for it.in my use,the 15mm wrench is very useful, and it does not have to be with great leverage either, just some few inches,to tighten and loose nuts of bicycles axle nuts.

i carry this one with just this task, its some 3,5 " long overall,if not even shorter.

A wire stripper can be useful as well.

Wire stripper will be integrated into the nail puller... the v will be sharpened to allow for wire stripping or cutting.

I think it's quaint that you're very specific with your imperial scale, but leave metric vague with "some form"

LoL what I was getting at was that I will definately be able to do accurate 1/8" incriments for the standard scale, but I dont know if I will be able to accurate maintain 1mm marks for the metric scale, so I will have SOME FORM of metric scale, maybe  by 2mm at a time, or something of that fashion.

I knew someone was gonna comment on that haha :D

I'm going to have a full CAD render as well as some in hand, near final prototypes as of tomorrow in the afternoon.  Me and my friend have put quite alot of hours into the CAD of the design of this, including some finite element analysis to ensure the part will not fail under typical loading.  Hope you guys are even a fraction as excited about this as i am!!!!!

Here it is, I'll get some actual pictures of the in-hand prototype that we had made today.  It looks great, let me know what you guys like/dont like/want changed/whatever.

Thanks for the support guys, it feels good to have hard work pay off  :ahhh . This is still a prototype though, so tell me what you guys want removed/added/changed, whatever.  We can refine this to make this perfect for you!!  It shouldn't be too expensive to make these, it will end up taking alot of man hours per part but me and my friend are not worried about that.  We enjoy doing the work,  its fun, and we know you guys will enjoy them!!!  So lets get some input, refine the design, and hopefully we can have an aluminum prototype next week!

That's really nice work, Dough!

I take it the driver is a flat-style phillips. Perhaps the other tip at the end of the alligator wrench could be turned into a flathead? Its axis could be perpendicular to the angle of the phillips.

Reducing the curve of the prybar portion might make it better for pocket carry, though it reduces the leverage. Or perhaps a little chisel or awl to that same end?

Perhaps a wire stripper notch could be added as an indent?

I think it's great that you are taking the initiative with this. This is a lot of fun!  :D

Ok, now that I've come back down to earth after "discovering" this thread. I'm thinking that maybe the two features that might not be necessary are the magnifying glass holder and the wire gauges/thumb grip.

The reasons are:
1) I think a magnifying glass would just get scratched up being in a pocket on a keychain thus rendering it un-usable.
2) Not sure how useful the wire gauges would actually be. It might not be worth the effort to include them.

I'm looking at this more from a cost to benefit ratio. Might there be something else that would be more useful in place of these two items?

Please, do not take offense to my thoughts. What you are doing is brilliant and requires waaay more talent than I have. Just thinking outloud is all.

Thanks again!
Mike

Part of me wants one of the sides to incorporate a blade...but then the other part of me says no as it would no longer be EDC for UK law.  :-\

That is a very cool looking thing Dough  8)

FWIW I agree with Mike's take, that the mag. glass and wire gauges are "nice to have", not things that would put me off wanting one, but definitely luxuries :D

Dough - Respect to you and your friend - I want one!

How long is it?

That looks really good. I like the design a lot, the features that you added make it very unique. My say is stick with it and see how much of this you can keep in the production model. The wire gauges are a nice addition giving the tool some of that uniqueness, but if they get dropped I guess metric ruler on one side (as is) and imperial on the other can take the spot.

We are definately thinking about ditching the magnifying glass, but I really like the idea of having it.  I agree that it will get scratched up in pocket carry, but I think its a useful thing to have... IM SO TORN ON THAT!!! haha.  What would you guys like to see instead of the magnifying glass?  BTW, that reduced the weight alot due to the large loss of steel in that area.  I think that the wire guage/grips work well.  Maybe you dont need a wire guage alot, but when you do you have one!! It also works really well as a thumb grip, and its not too difficult for us to throw it into a milling machine and mill some bumps.

As for the blade, flash...i thought about it but I really dont want an exposed sharp edge on this.  Its going to be used in several appliation with applied torque, and that is just an accident waiting to happen!!!

-Dough

PS. Critiques are not seen as mean, I encourage you guys to throw your ideas.  In no way does it offend me, it actually makes me feel good that you guys are enjoying the project, so keep the ideas flowing!!!

EDIT - For a full list of tools check the first post, it also included the CAD files, Pictures of the prototype, and will contain updates!.
