Mod - The Tool Every SAK Needs - A Paperclip!
on: January 12, 2018, 12:56:44 AM
I had these old translucent green scales laying around.  I was thinking - how could I make a SAK even more useful?  I already used it to adjust the “P-Setting” on my Traeger smoker.

Edit: just realized I posted to the wrong forum.  Meant to post to mods

Nice!

[It's not failure if you learn something from it]

I’ll see what I can do.

I needed a paperclip, but all I had was a SAK so I just came up with this. I didn’t think there would be room to fit it, but it actually worked better than I expected.

I used a sharp wood chisel (Mora Craftsman knife) to cut out the ribs on the back of the scale between the two pins of the knife. I also had to cut out some of the tweezer slot - which didn’t affect the tweezer usage.

The translucent scale material was fairly hard to cut, I think it would be easier to do on cellidor. However I thought it would be better to see through it.

I’ve done other mods that involved peening. I’ve hand cut brass liners, etc. never tried to mod a scale before. Thanks guys.

I thought the the translucent scales are made of the same material(celidor) that the regular ones are?
I'd be interested if anyone knows more about this.  :pok:

Anyway, cool concept.  :tu:

+1!

One can of course counter any tendency for the paper clip to leave the slot by slightly bending the inner loop out of plane, so as to create a spring

Yes you can spring it a little, but it fits fine without doing that. The edge of the paper clip sits just proud of the liner so I can get it with a finger nail.

I guess I’m not sure if the translucent scales are cellidor.  Red cellidor seems softer than these green translucent scales.

I thought for a minute you just shoved a paperclip somewhere in among the tools. Carving a dedicated slot out of the cellidor is something else entirely! So I take back my previous comment.

I guess this is officially my second mod on a scale if you count adding the Swiss Blanco pocket clip on my EDC soldier.

Cutting the slot for the paper clip was done with the Morakniv Craftsman pictured.  Not a Vic, but it really comes in handy sometimes. The slot is a little rough. I plan to do this again on another knife and have a plan to make the cut cleaner
