An Aquatic Huntsman
on: January 13, 2018, 05:21:41 PM
This post reports on my first SAK mod, and a modest one at that, to get some experience in the various steps of the process as well as with the use of peening tools. The starting point is a black-scaled Swiss Champ that I managed to find brand new in the Bay at a good price (some would call it a bargain at about 60% of local MSRP).

The end product is what amounts to a Huntsman plus the fish scaler (hence the name in the title) and a full complement of back tools identical to the Swiss Champ's, i.e. including the chisel and small screwdriver. This results in the highest tool density possible - none of the back slots is occupied by just a spring :D. I'm really a bit proud of that.

One advantage of slimming down a SAK is that one can use the original pivots to great advantage, which I did here. Just in case I wouldn't have been able to, I did stock up on 2.5 and 2.2 mm brass rod, but did not have to use it in the end.

Curious as to why I would slim down a perfectly functional Swiss Champ? For one, I already have an SC, but not yet a Huntsman or anything that size. In addition, the tools I removed are going to be needed for another little project of mine. Patience my friends - more about this in the next episode.

Pics say more than 1000 words, so here goes:

De-scaling, so to speak. I soaked the SC in hot water before using the small blade on the other SC to gently pry the scales off. Then I used the auto centre punch to mark where the drill would be applied on the pivots.

Drilling. I used a cordless Bosch with 2.5 mm bit for the big pivots and 2 mm for the small ones - worked well. Make sure the brass bushings stay intact, we'll need them later.

Disassembly is straightforward so I won't show it. Make sure you lay the pieces in the sequence they came off.

The next pic shows the reassembled Aquatic Huntsman prior to cutting the pivots to length (I used 1.5 mm over the baseline, i.e. liner or bushing).

Peening in progress. This was much easier than I had expected...

Peening completed.

After this I soaked the scales and the tool in hot water again, then applied the scales in their almost correct positions, wrapped all in an old T shirt and clamped it in a vise for 5 minutes. The pic below shows the completed tool and the bits I took out. Operation completed, and as far as I can determine, succesful!

A practical addition to my collection :tu: and worth it for the experience.

Thanks... Ah... about that... I was quite lucky. In one of the pics you will see I have the bushing on the wrong middle pivot. This almost got me to cut off said pivot way short. I noticed in time... I'm happy with the overall result though. But due to the bushings these are easy to do with a flat faced hammer. I might need to gain more expertise for Alox models...

Jobs is a good'un :tu:

The sight of the bushing on the backspring pivot had yelling "WATCH OUT" at the screen. Luckily my worries were laid to rest when I saw the picture of the finished work.

Excellent job! And a bold move to include the fish scaler. :salute:

Can I ask why you included it? Right now, lacking imagination, and from reading reports that it's an inferior scaler, I only see it as a ruler and probing and scraping tool, and would rather keep the file.

Somewhere around. Here or there. Not important enough to bookmark, for sure.

I'm not making the claim, only reporting what I've read. It's hardly a popular tool and I'd prefer to hear that it works well as a scaler. Does it? I don't fish so I've never tried it.

I think the Ranger has one extra liner or am I mistaken?

Thanks, all

I actually intended to skin the original SwissChamp down to a normal Huntsman. The tools I took off (including the file) are needed for another little project I'm working on. However, doing the arithmetic I came to the conclusion I could leave the fish scaler and all the back tools in, by judicious application of the right back spring. Little extra weight, and I'd end up with a set of tools I'd never seen anywhere before, plus the highest tool density (number of tools related to weight) for any 91 mm SAK - there are those with (many) more tools, but at the cost of some layers only having springs at the back. This is the result.

The fish scaler has its uses. I don't fish, but I've used the ruler. Plus you can use it for prodding things you wouldn't want to touch or accidentally skewer, or as an impromptu emergency long-reach low-torque screwdriver, fork, olive pick, coffee stirrer, staple remover, paint stirrer, anything stirrer really...

It seems it's enjoying its time in my pocket and at today's odd jobs like opening a box and screwing a PC monitor foot together  :D :D

Cheers!

+1 - it has many uses doesn't it? Aside from the ones you've mentioned, Monrogue uses his for a backscratcher (very effective) and I've used mine several times to mark lines on timber with a pencil.
