Favorite SAK/multitool combos
on: November 07, 2008, 05:11:44 PM
My tool EDC these days is almost always a combination of a SAK and a plier-based multitool.  I find that this is very functional, because I can accomplish many smaller tasks with just the SAK, use the multitool for heavy duty tasks, or I can use the tools together for tasks that couldn't be accomplished with just one tool.

I find it fun to come up with the combinations that work well together.  What I am looking for when I do this is a SAK/multi combination that gives me a great deal of functionality without much redundancy in tools.  Usually I categorize SAKs and multis as "urban" or "woods" (outdoor), and combine them as a matched pair--one of each type.  I consider a "woods" tool one with an awl and a wood saw, and an "urban" tool as one with scissors, grooming functions, etc.

Below are photos of a few of my favorite combinations.

Leatherman KF4/Victorinox Golfer Special This is my most compact combination.  Both tools are very small, but the tool combination here covers all the bases.  I consider the KF4 the "woods" part of the combo, and the Golfer "urban".

Leatherman Pulse/Victorinox Farmer or OHT  This is the combination I find myself carrying the most.  This set is more "full sized" than the previous, but is still very compact for carry.  The Farmer is the "woods" tool here (one of the best!), and I consider the Pulse an "urban" tool with its scissors and phillips screwdriver.  If I feel that I need a corkscrew and don't mind going a little larger, I will substitute an OHT for the Farmer.  Let's face it, the Pulse has one of the best files in the business....

Leatherman Wave/Victorinox Electrician  Last but not least, I've been carrying this combo for a week or so and I'm liking it quite a bit.  I could almost carry the Wave by itself and consider it "urban" and "woods" if it weren't for the glaring ommission of an awl!  So, I combine it with an Electrician for very little redundancy in tools.  I don't really consider an extra blade or two as redundant, especially when all the blades are of varying shapes and uses.

No funny looks as you loaded up your pockets with at least Six multis to go take some pictures of a stump?

That's a pretty fancy Wave to be taking out into the woods!

I carried them in a box.  I'll try to use a backdrop that suits you better next time.

I have a "beater" Wave.  I just thought that one would make the stump look prettier.  :P  :D

It certainly did!

I've been carrying a SAK/multitool combo for a while now.  My favorite at the moment is my Scibeer Farmer and a Leatherman Crunch.

If I'm edcing my Spirit or one of my Swisstool's I just pair it with a 58 or 65mm sak, as I don't think I'd get away with carrying a Sak and an MT (I know all the arguments for doing it, but I'd rather not have to explain it to an ignorant copper, who just want's an easy nick).
Give in, buy several Farmer's!!!!!!

That hard-anodized finish is amazing Dunc.  I can't imagine what it would take to ding the scales on those Scibeer Farmers.

That one is the natural finish though--it's more of a deep grey/olive finish.  Tim has both colors available.  I know the price is a bit steep for a Farmer, but I think the durability is worth it.  Oh, and those hand-hammered brass pins...

The Farmer is very nice especially that Scibeer Mod  But I fancy the Electrician Plus (I like the extra blade) and the LM Pulse I carry it for the same reason Terry carries it :tu: very great all around combo :D

Lately, when I'm not working I have been carrying a SOG PL S62 and a Benchmade Mini Grip. This is a really effective combo!

My favorite combination is whatever multi I'm carrying, plus a Vic Explorer Plus.  Since I got it, I've been doing my Spirit or my Spirit S with my Explorer.  It is a perfect companion and has a whole lot of tools that the Spirit doesnt have.

SwissTool + OHT in the woods (soldier as a backup). At the moment vic mechanic (in the past ST, Soldier, Climber, oht) + alox classic is always on my key chain. Once my skeletool arrives things might change. I'll be going LT Vic combo to check the skele out. All of this LT business might change once the new Spirit comes out.

Yep the combo covers pretty much everything you might need in the woods. Having both is very redundant wood saw and knife x2 in case one breaks or is lost. I always have a Mora fixed blade strapped to my belt + psk in the woods.
