Why all here?
on: March 14, 2024, 06:36:13 AM
I have slowly noticed that many major (and favorite) MT/knife companies reside here in Portland, just to name a few:
Leatherman, CRKT, Gerber, Kershaw, and Benchmade!  :o

Every time I visit Costco, Leatherman is a block away...

That's easy.

Joseph Gerber lived there.   :D

Because Gerber was there and started Gerber Knife Co. there were tradespeople able to make knives.  Many went out on their own after working at Gerber and started other companies.  They started them locally because they already lived there.

This also meant that there were suppliers of the types of materials used in the knife industry around, which encouraged others to set up shop nearby.

That's largely it in a nutshell.

Yes, we do. Not from the same brands, though.

Hopefully when aliens invade, they'll realize we're just as weird as them. "Oh, you collect knives and tools too?" :tu:
I wonder if they have ice-cream.

No, I don't think they will ever invade. I think the reason we've never seen any aliens is that we're on some taboo list and there is some galactic no trespassing signal out there: Crazy planet, collects knives and multitools, and even eats ice-cream. Stay at least 50 lightyears away. No wonder we don't see aliens!

And WE/Civivi, Eafengrow, Kubey, Flissa, Harnds, Vigor, the more I look the more there are.

If it's a knife or multi-tool, and made in China, it's probably made in Yangjiang.

Yep yep, aren't they somehow contracted through the government or something. I remember reading something negative about knife companies in China and how they're funded or something, maybe encouraged to start a company in the providence?

Some 20 or so years ago business clusters with various specializations were all the rage. It makes sense on many levels - different business, sub suppliers, investors, banks, public services working within the same field can all benefit from being located in the same area. Of course, over here, someone came up with the concept of "decentralized business clusters".. Which work pretty as a cluster except for the cluster part. Go figure.

Internet helps bringing everything closer at some levels, but there is still physical parts and people to move.

It would be an interesting experience, visiting a few of the factories. Maybe twenty in one day? :D

Years ago we had organized an MTO Leatherman factory trip.

Unfortunately I was unable to attend, but the people that did go had a great time, as you can see!
