Old habits die hard
on: January 16, 2018, 10:41:15 PM
Last month, I bought a Leatherman Rebar to carry along with my SAK Mountaineer.  The 2 have a lot of overlapping tools but the Rebar has pliers, a saw, and a 3D Phillips.  The Mountaineer has scissors, a corkscrew, tweezers, a toothpick, and the file works great as a small Phillips.  I figured they would compliment each other but I find I almost never reach for the Rebar.  I've had it a month and find I'm always using the SAK, even on Phillips head screws (SAK can opener).  I've carried a SAK for so long (over 40 years) that i instinctively reach for it even though the Rebar might be the better choice in certain situations.  Locking tools, 2 locking blades, full Phillips, a can opener that works great for opening boxes, pliers...I should be using the Rebar a lot.

Last weekend, I did a lot of work around the house and forced myself to use the Rebar.  It's a great tool and worked very well.  I still love my Mountaineer, but I'm going to start a new habit of using my Rebar for more than just pliers and a saw.

Hi lew

I have both and carry the Rebar daily for some months now. I really like the Mountaineer but at 4 layers, it is at the size limit for me to carry in pocket. I like the tool overlap and differences. SAKs have better bottle openers (plus tweezers and toothpick) but the Rebar is just such a solid tool I barely need the mountaineer. Often I carry a Tinker with the Rebar.

I bet a Mountaineer and a PS4 would also be a good pairing. Even just a Tinker and a PS4 would probably do well.

Welcome to MTo lew

So true ......
I love my LMs - But I find I always select/prefer the SAK for most days' carry or jobs

For me I think this is due to:
  • Habit - As you say
  • But mainly the pure convenience of all outside opening tools
  • Also tool selection - I do use the scissors a lot, plus files, TT etc
  • And of course size/weight

I agree. SAKs over MTs are very often the result of easier to access tools and quicker deployment.
If only the Rebar was built like the Spirit... ::)

What you could do, is attempt a Rebar 30 day challenge to start new habits.
The Rebar is solid, and when broken in, tools deploy well.
That maybe the best method to test your newest tool.

Hope yours is as good!

Maybe you're right.  I reach for the SAK without thinking, but when I make myself use the Rebar, it works great.  30 day challenge it is.

Great pic :like:

Is this the start of the challenge? Or are you going to wait for an official start  Plus it helps me to number the posts with the days of the challenge :salute:

Either way  :like:

Not sure how a 30 day challenge works.  Does that mean I have to use the Rebar exclusively?  It doesn't have scissors and I NEED scissors!  Do I need to post an update every day?  With pics?  BTW, I started Saturday.

Yep - Picture every day   (- which is why I have never done a badge challenge!)

And - You can only use the tool nominated in the challenge ...... Or a regular tool  ......  Looks like you need to have a pair of scissors to hand

And this could be the answer to whether the Rebar is the right tool for you   :o   ..... Maybe a Wingman ???

I use scissors on a daily basis so Spirit is what I carry.
I knew my wife was a keeper when she transitioned from calling it a knife thingy to a multi-tool.

here you have a 30-Day Rebar challenge than Nix did last month, and one of the best Monthly Challenges we've had in the last years on the LM Subforum. Worth a look,, with very good narrative, uses and pics of a full month of Rebar usage!  :salute:

https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,74761.0.html

He survived without scissors, something he was worried about when beginning the challenge. See how he did and try out on your own is my suggestion

OK, I'll start today and go through scissors withdrawal.  Is there such a thing as a "30 day challenge fail" badge?

Doesn't that violate the 30 day challenge?

challenges are just start a thread and post a photo for 30 consecutive days(hard enough to keep that up) doesn't limit you to just using only that tool

I'm reffering to the merit badge/awards challenges, unless I guess someone challenges u to just use 1 thing

I thought the whole point of a 'challenge' - which is rewarded by a merit badge is to:
  • Post a pic every day for a month of you using that tool
  • Use that tool - and only that tool - for the whole month - Otherwise why is it a challenge ???

I'm pretty sure this is how it was when these things first started - Eh ?

Help please moderators   :o

they dont mention it in the awards section, for me to post a pic for 30 days without missing a day seems hard enough, besides, how can someone prove they are carrying just the one tool?

Some are for use of a tool exclusively, others are not.  Hope this helps. :)
