How to tell Lynn has been 'crafting'
on: January 25, 2018, 05:51:43 PM
I am in the strange position now of having 4 of the 5 fingers on my right hand injured.

Middle finger and index finger from making my second folding backpacking stove. The middle finger has a small blood blister under the nail from whacking it with a hammer. I was certain when I did it that I'd broken the finger, it hurt so much. I don't even KNOW what the damage on the tip of the index finger is, but I think it's crush damage from pushing against the sheet metal, also while making the folding stove.

The thumb was from reprofiling the tip of a blade. While filing it, I ran the exceedingly stabby tip right into my thumb. And it was pretty deep, maybe a quarter inch. Dripped blood freely for a few minutes.

The ring finger damage is from the same blade as the thumb, but done the next day... with a FILE. I somehow managed to STAB myself with the corner of a FILE.

And what you CAN'T see is another abrasion on the side of the index finger from... who knows what, and a bloody scrape on the thumb just below the first knuckle.

These aren't BIG injuries, but I can't use a single SMURFING finger on that hand without pain now. Well... okay... the pinky.

I've worked with wood and stuff enough to simply accept that minor injuries are going to happen. I've just never had so many at one time on so many very sensitive portions of my hands before. Yes, this is me whining and being a delicate little flower.  :D

I wear safety goggles. Seriously. I love my eyes too much to take a metal splinter in one while messing with a dremel.

Side story. When I was in the Air Force, our Chief Master Sergeant had a freak accident while cutting some jalapenos. A splinter from one of the seeds flew up and stuck in the white of his eye. He had to go to the hospital, and they used a TINY drill to try to extract it. It didn't work. Next day, try again. Didn't work, THIRD day, they removed it. The whole time, when his eye teared up, it would release more oil from the seed, start burning, which caused more tearing. Chief walked around for weeks afterward with an eye patch. At the next Commander's Call, the Chief gave a safety briefing on the proper way to cut jalapenos, and came out with big safety goggles on. It was hilarious, and he was an incredibly good sport about the whole thing.

Excellent!  :D

I know what you mean, when I first started using a dremel I treated it like a tiny toy drill,
you soon learn that it will bite you when you aren't expecting it  :salute:

I think in keeping with the theme of this site, I'd have to go with this fine Victorinox product. In other news... Hey, Victorinox makes chain gloves!

"Reversible design allows it to fit either hand". Good to know for lefties. :tu:

"Reversible design allows it to fit either hand".

That is code for "Doesn't really fit any hand".

Lynn, one thing Ihave noticed as I have been on my journey through the senior citizen stage of my life is; that I seem to have a new clumsiness about me. Hands not as flexible, balance not quite as good. A few more bumps and spills per month than I remember in my "younger " days. I think it's part of the human condition that as seniors we need a box of bandaids near by, and aspirin for the arthritis.

Bandaids and aspirin Lynn. It's inevitable.

Don't get too serious, just enough will do.

It does fit actually, as you turn it inside out for the other hand  :pok:

 :ahhh   :ahhh

My head is spinning! No seams it seems, so it just might inverse perfectly on itself. Interesting!

Ok, I'm pretty sure they aren't waterproof at least? (Please let me keep some of my worldview intact).
