A question to SAK owners...is this a genuine SAK?
on: November 08, 2008, 12:29:41 AM
I got this SAK as a gift some time ago after I lost mine but is just until recently that I pay atention to the logo. It is not exactly the Victorinox logo isn´t it? probably an older version? This tool looks/feels like it´s very well done, the knives, can and bottle opener etc, look exactly like those in my older SAK. Other difference that I find is the matte finish instead of the typical glossy red...is this a knock off? (a very good one in any case).

By the way, very nice forum you have running here  :tu:

That looks like one of Victorinox's eco SAK's.  :)

So yes, I'd say it was genuine.

Yeah it's the nylon scale, I actually like it better because it's more scratch resistant.

That's an Eco-SAK!

The Best Value for Money knives available!

I'd never heard of them until I joined this forum, but since getting one (Imported stuff costs tres $$$ in Oz) I can only recommend them to anyone.

Get one for yourself, get one for your girlfriend, and her poodle, and her old man, and then get another one for yourself, 'cause they're cheap and excellent!

With Eco-SAKs on the market, no one has any excuse whatsoever to buy a knock off.

I am with you on that. I like the nylon scales, and WHY is everyone calling them an "Eco" scale?  Most all of the 111mm knives are covered with nylon scales and I never hear about someone calling their 111mm Rescue tool or OHT with "Eco" scales! The only thing I have ever seen with "economy" on it is a few of the cheaper cost knives made and tang stamped with "Economy" on the back side tang stamp. OK {log off rant}  :ahhh

Welcome to the forum.  That is indeed an eco model, and a genuine Victorinox.  Over the years Victorinox has experimented with a number of ways to put out a more inexpensive model without skimping on quality, hence the name "Eco" which is short for economy.  The nylon scales are a little cheaper to manufacture than the standard cellidor, and the tools aren't quite as polished as the regular line models.

It looks like a Spartan model to me, if that helps.

Thank you very much for your answers and the welcomes  :salute:
I had no idea there were cheaper versions from victorinox. Actually I was more curious than worried, the implements always seemed very well made to me and now is good to know this material is more scratch resistant  :D
I searched for Climber in Amazon and yes, I found the very same logo! http://www.amazon.com/Victorinox-Swiss-Climber-Pocket-Knife/dp/B0009KF4H0/ref=pd_rhf_f_i_cs_3 only that mine is more like the Spartan + saw. :multi:

The blade on my eco climber is not stamped "eco", and the polish looks same as on my regular vic's.

No eco markings on my lumberjack either.  I rate it above most of cellidor models.

They used to be tang stamped economy many years ago but you won't come across that on any recent knives.

Risking a wicked excoriation from the Confederacy of Helveticans, I have to admit I had not a single clue what "Cellidor" was until some precision googooling.

"Cellulose Acetate Propionate / Cellulose Acetate Butyrate"  will now replace my "Oooo!  Shiny!  Red!" comments in polite company.

And to thinks of all thems teacher that talked how learning me good was unpossible!  :ahhh

I read somewhere (on SOSAK maybe?) that the liners of the economy models are not clear anodized, and they regular models are.  I have no idea if this is true or not.

Actually, they have had many names over the years, only one of them being "Eco."  Elinox and Econoline come to mind, so I guess nylon is more accurate, since some of the various economy versions had plastic scales (as opposed to the cellidor) and yet others were missing the toothpick and tweezers.

OK, here is an "Economy" tang stamped Vic. This is found on the backside of one of those "Special Sales" models with the "Hiker" name and inlay on the front produced back in the late 80's I think. There is a brochure page with all of the models on it somewhere I think. It is definitely Cellidor and the tools look the same as regular Vic's to me. Although this blade was poorly sharpened by someone. There are no inserts but there is a keyring. I think there were 3 different models like this one.

I have a Weekender and a Camper stamped like that, I don't think I have any others  Both are a slightly brighter red than the normal scales.

Wow  :o That's in good condition, has that saw ever been used?

Both of my Economy stamped knives have seen plenty of use.
