Oil for sak?
on: January 20, 2018, 09:24:07 PM
Hai,

I have a Victorinox Huntsman that I want to clean and oil, the official Victorinox Multitool Oil seems way too expensive for a few tablespoons and I heard of people using mineral oil. Will this stuff do?

If it is foodsafe it should be OK (unless you will not cut any food with it)

The victorinox one is not cheap, but it lasts for years, as you only need a drop

SAKs aren't very picky about the oil you use. And that mineral oil should work fine.
Personally, I use Baby oil, which is mineral oil under a different name, maybe with other stuff added, and can be found in pharmacies.
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

You list the UK site.  Here in the US mineral oil is easy to find in drug stores.

From Wikipedia:
"Mineral oil", sold widely and cheaply in the USA, is not sold as such in Britain. Instead British pharmacologists use the terms "Paraffinum perliquidum" for light mineral oil and "Paraffinum liquidum" or "Paraffinum subliquidum" for somewhat thicker (more viscous) varieties. The term "Paraffinum Liquidum" is often seen on the ingredient lists of baby oil and cosmetics. British aromatherapists commonly use the term "white mineral oil".

Hope that clears things up.

I use regular ol' mineral oil, it works fine.   I do wish it was just a tad more viscous, but like my friend, Who, says, "A clean SAK doesn't need oil"

Mineral oil for me, too. The food grade stuff. I use it to preserve my wood cutting board anyway, so a big bottle for cheap makes sense.

Don't use my SAKs for food, so I just use good old 3 in 1 oil on my knives.
