Thanks everyone.  :D

Its really not much of a mod. Those that acid wash knife blades would know. It's a rather simple acid dunk, soda bath and stone wash if you wish. I tried to do the stonewash by hand for the pst and rebar.. I gave up after 5mins...I think my arms will fall off before achieving the desired effect. And the noise..  :facepalm:Finished with soaking it in wd40 to prevent rusting. A mid grit sand paper do wonderful cross hatch pattern too. Just watch out for the moving parts though. The acid will eat them up. Just FYI, I used the ferric chloride for my etching. Baking soda to neutralise the acid.

I am looking to do the same for my satin finished powerlock.. Didn't like the super glossy finish.. 🤔

Btw, the picture effect turn out darker than it really is. Well my room is dark. I do use some lighting for the effect. Plus my new tabletop design is awesome. In real life, it's more of a matt greyish colour. But they still look pretty neat. If anyone have better guide to making them darker, pls do share around.  ;) I had read dunking them in near boiling water straight after the acid will do that. From where I am, knifes and such are frowned upon. Not much interest are gathered here.. 😐

☺️

Pardon my ignorance and just reporting some findings. Again, I am just experimenting. I dipped a 154CM blade in to the ferric chloride and it turned out really dark. I would say it's equivalent to a black oxide coated blade. See pic and enjoy!

can i soak my gerber mp600 in this ferric chloride to get a BO look? or will it be grey?

will it soften the tools or effect them in any other way?

I am not sure of the steel that Gerber uses. The acid reacts with different steel grade in different way.. Even the final finishing that Gerber uses on the tools plays a part. I am no Chemist, I just like the look and I do believe the reaction is only on the surface. I remember the lock tab is riveted. The acid will definitely take away some metal from the tool. You might end up with some loose parts or fittings..

And I dun believe the steel that Gerber uses have a high enough carbon content to achieve a desired BO look.. Hey, grab a stock BO Mp600. They are relatively affordable and easily available on ebay.

It doesn't really turn it very dark. More like a matt greyish kind of colour.
