They have them for the larger Beckers, so you could wait until you get one of those. A lot of cool color choices: https://www.theknifeconnection.net/becker-bk2-10-g10-scales/

LOL! Yes but these Ka-Bar scales were 40 bucks a pop for a functional upgrade...if I swap em now it would be 60+ for an aesthetic upgrade......can't do that for a knife that's going into a wildfire/weather/trouble bag.  We'll see how it goes but even my shopaholic daughter says I'm spending too much money....

Well, at least with the Work Sharp there is a certain utilitarian return. You might get a lot more use out of it than additional knives for your collection or knives for emergency bags. And the guides with it do make it very easy to keep the profile angle consistent as you sharpen. Just have to make certain you don't grind off the tip (watch tutorial videos on YouTube).

And the Work Sharp is fast. I got a Buck Vantage Force last year which was dull from the factory. Got that blade improved in five minutes or so with the Work Sharp. :)

A Work Sharp? I know they work but I got no idea how good of an edge they give in the end

Here's the only problem, it basically convexes the edge (right?) so I would probably only use it on the Rio Grande Bowie and my Trail Master (or on problem knives) but on the rest of my field knives, I want them to stay where a diamond stone will work. Gtting to the point where free hand sharpening is a little more difficult but I still enjoy it.

See my concern? Probably still get one next month anyway as eventually it might be all I can use.

Yes. A belt sander like that puts on a convex edge.

People prefer convex because the edge lasts longer; a lot of people carry bark river knives, right, which are all covex? And you can sharpen one in the field: http://woodtrekker.blogspot.com/2010/08/sharpening-convex-edge-in-field.html

Tried that Woodtrekker method on the bowie before I ordered the KSF kit...couldn't get it to work for me. I even tried some 1500 grit sandpaper (that David mentioned) backed by a soft leather pad followed by black then green work on the KSF kit....still couldn't get that last 1.5 inches shaving sharp.   Makes me crazy!!!!!!!!!!   :ahhh

Are you using the technique for the belly that virtuovice uses with stropping (can't remember)? Jump to half way:

Pretty much, tried heel to tip as well....that guy makes it look so easy. I think I need more abrasive on the strop too (according to that vid). I'll try again....my angle is higher too due to the 1/4 blade thickness and steep convex.

You could always get some TKO G.-10 scales

(Image removed from quote.)

Wow, those are
Sg, great looking 15! How do you like it? I'm fully in love with my 17, broke it in last night with some hardwood batonning/carving :D

I'll take some pics in a sec  :tu:

Well, only one was any good. Looky!

Great pic!!!!  I like the 15. It's a really nice size and I know folks down the upturned blade shape as poor for tasks like hunting but I used similar upturned blade (a Schrade Walden 147) for 30 years hunting and never poked a gut or ruined anything.

Thanks!

I agree about the 15. It's funny, my friend has one, it was the first Becker I handled. We were in the woods last night for an overnighter, and he had his 15, and I my 17. Both were very effective, and did a ton of work with no edge deformation (I mean, literally batonning  :D ). Love the 17, but the 15 slices so well, and the trailing edge is just nice, it's like extra belly.

I love the 5 now though. Now that it doesn't look like a kitchen knife ::)

I'd love to get scales, but I'm not about to double the cost of any of these just to look nice... For a while, anyway. Just hard, when I spent 40 and 50 for the 5 and 15, to drop 30-40 just for scales  ::)

The Micarta ones look good but them being a little thicker (and less smooth) helps my arthritic fingers hold on to the knife better.

Well, and if you don't get them on a good sale, and then you add the micarta scales in, you are getting close to ESEE pricing as an alternative since they come with micarta. The ESEE Laser Strike is on my wishlist before another Becker since TKO often has it for under $100 shipped.

I like ESEE okay, but they're all just ffg drop point it feels like, which is a great design, I just like variety. Plus I prefer 50-100B to 1095. I can't see a better value than a Becker  :D

I agree about Beckers. When you pick up one of their models for the first time, there's that feeling of  "Now this is a TOOL." I think Beckers and Moras are the best price/performance values in fixed knives :)

I'd love to get scales, but I'm not about to double the cost of any of these just to look nice... For a while, anyway. Just hard, when I spent 40 and 50 for the 5 and 15, to drop 30-40 just for scales  ::)

There's a reason I've got 3 (4) beckers, 3 moras, 1 crkt (minimalist, it's neat), Gerber profile (had forever), and cold steel (wanted a tanto just because) for fixed blades. Other than curios and my old Gerber, I've got moras and beckers to use. They're just so good! And moras are nice to learn sharpening techniques with, cheap if you mess up!

I was so happy last night when I got to use my bk17 for the first time. I love having a reason to actually carry a knife :D

I usually post on the SAK side of the house.....This is my latest acquisition.  Yes, it is NOT a SAK...but once you see my retirement gift to me (after 21 years in the Army and three trips to Mesopotamia), you will understand.

Randall #14 Attack: Stainless sawteeth blade, nickel silver double hilt, Border Patrol black Micarta handle, waxed leather brown C sheath and SPEC OPS Combat Master Large sheath.  Oh, it is VERY razor sharp.  These are hand-made knives to order.  Typical order time from individual to delivery is now 4 YEARS.  My wait ordering from one of 70 Randall dealers worldwide was 5 MONTHS.  My only regret: not doing this 20 years ago:
