The BK7 with micrata handles.     :)

I can't remember, are the handles new?

Yes, SG they are the factory micrata. Just got them yesterday. I do like the way the BK7 looks with the micrata. They are thicker arent they? They're trying to crowd my hand in a spot or two. May have to get the sand paper out and reshape them a bit here and there. I'll give it time and see if I adjust to them. I'm glad i didnt order the kydex sheath I was wanting yet as the new handles will not work in a kydex sheath made with the regular handles.      :D

Yes they are thicker and on the 5,they shift the balance of the knife, settles in the hand better. I really like them but oddly enough, the factory ones on the 15 seem just right...probably won't replace those. I think the micarta grips are worth the money!  :tu:

Perhaps because the tweeners have solid scales vs skeletonized big beckers?

Probably so!   Micarta is "grippier" too...:tu:

Oh! You're saying factory micarta on the 15? Thought you meant factory gv6h or whatever and micarta vs gv6h on the large one

I should add that Tony is referring to the Chris Caine Survival Tool, and not anything that might have been reflected in any of the blades

I like the look of the handles and overall blade shape on that one David, but what's with the "lump" on the spine just forward of the handle? Seems too large a knife to want a thumb rest.

Question for the Becker gurus, which is the one supposedly modelled on / influenced by the British MOD knife?

It's called a "thumb ramp," and I understand it has some tactical value for thrusting and stabbing. The Becker BK7, 9, and 10 were supposedly designed with some combat use in mind (at least, they are labeled that way).

I have heard that the BK-2 was modeled after the British MOD, but don't know for sure. Best would be to search for Ethan Becker and see if he's said anything about it.

Right then yup okay, that's what I thought, what I said originally stands ha. I love the solid stock tweener scales, though I also love the full Becker ones. Hope to stipple them at some point though!

@50ft-trad Is the Chris Caine Parang worth the money? It looks beautiful.

Worth every penny to me, but I might view it slightly differently with it being made in my home town  :) Having said that, I have used the knive very hard and it's a very impressive tool. I don't think I'd have paid that much for a knife from elsewhere, but it's a beastie and will probably outlast me.

The coating is fluorolon and it's not chipped anywhere no matter how much it's been batonned or how many logs I've hacked through. I wish the Warthog had the same coating to be honest.

I'd comfortably put it up against any other carbon steel knife from any other manufacturer. The quality at Scorpion Knives/Samuel Staniforths is significantly better than the rather agricultural offerings from John Newill/Jack Adams. I've actually been round the factory, met the owner, the works manager, and the guy that actually makes them.
No doubt, Sheffield has long tradition in knifemaking. Supporting its work is good for the craft industry and especially meaningful when it's your hometown

Glad to know about the maker of this parang, an expensive one by my standard.

Caine's mentor, Lofty Wiseman has a parang with a restrictive handle grip and forward bend on the spine. A bit of the Khukuri's angle. I think Caine's parang is more comfortable for long periods of use.

Discovered Michael Sanderson's knife on Youtube two days ago. Looks well polished in a golok-like blade shape. Named Orrick 2, made by Willowwood Knives.

I'll probably try one of the affordable Malaysian made parangs (spring steel, differencial tempered) offered on Outdoor mDynamics.com.

Lofty's knives are made in the same factory  ;) I got to handle one when I was there and preferred the grip on the Chris Caine for that reason.

I don't like knives that dictate you have to hold it a certain way like Lofty's does. Chris's allows a few different grips to suit the job at hand. When I went there, I asked the lad who makes them to try to make the handle a little slimmer on mine to better suit my modest grip size. The steel was already coated so he couldn't do anything too aggressive, but he did radius the micarta a little more than standard.

It's still a touch on the large size for my hands, and for prolongued chopping I'd rather have an axe, but overall I find it way better than Lofty's. The CC is significantly heavier too, although they also offer a smaller variant now which has a Lofty type weight to the blade, smaller handle, but still in the CC style. IT doesn't have the coating though, which is one thing I love so much about this military version

Thanks for that  there's some funny old stuff in the knife world, and the thumb ramps have always confused me, even on smaller knives. If I'm going to be doing a thrusting/piercing cut with something, even into carpet or a water butt, or anything else, I certainly don't want that force transitted down an extended thumb  :ahhh I think a closed fist absorbs the force much better, but hey, that's just me.

I'll check out the BK2 and see how they moved the design along  :tu:

Interesting that you visited the workshop and got them to modify the scales. Kudos to CC for creating a more versatile parang than his mentor.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, I prefer your parang to Lofty's. The straighter lines for a start, and there's more heft on yours (the official Lofty knife felt a little light.... though that was after I'd been handling the Chris Caine military version, so that might have coloured my perspective)

Mild kobun mods coming along. Got it because I wanted a good aus8 fixed blade at a good price. I cut the back of the guard off so I can get my thumb on it, and am working on shaping it into a more rounded belly, slow going with the new diamond diafold. Will I wear it out doing this?

I wore a extra coarse Diafold out with years of sharpening axes and lawnmower blades...it will probably work ok but it will wear/smooth it out some. I bought one of those lansky pucks for that stuff these days.

Right on, thanks. I'm hoping it will just smooth out some and perform like that for a while. Either way, loving the kobun, I think if I can get it the right shape I'll give it a good amount of carry!
