LM crunch removing blade with ?
on: January 06, 2018, 09:16:08 PM
Hi got my LM crunch in January and what a excellent multitool
The problem is the locking blade as this is not legal in the uk, so no good for edc
What I want to do is remove the blade and fit scissors instead or something else
Just not sure what could fit ?
Do like the bit that holds the jigsaw blades like on the surge, but than I would have to lose the flathead screwdriver next to the blade as well or more!
Any suggestions would be much apriciated thanks

If adding in scissors I would suggest trying the ones from the PST II or old style Wave, they would seem to go better with the Crunch as it is an old school LM as well

Ponch, how wide are PST II scissors? Not just the tang (and what I think must be a spacer?), but from pics of PST II scissors I am guessing that the width of the scissor blades plus lever might interfere with the Crunch's flat driver blade (the left one if looking down into the handle) and/or maybe the Phillips head. Or is the tab located far enough towards the pliers to just clear any driver blades?
Also, not much space between the handle wall and the pliers head cutout on the Crunch - the PST II scissors lever tab, while on the correct side compared to e.g. the one on the new Wave, might interfere with the pliers head, although maybe trimming the tab down is an option...

Anybody have a pic looking down into the PST II's scissors holding handle? I regret to say I don't own one myself...

Edit: found a pic here showing the OG Wave scissors (=PST II scissors) - looks to me to be slightly too wide to fit a Crunch (or its main blade width, at least)...

PST II scissors won’t work, apart from the width the tab on the scissors handle would cover the plier head cut out.

You could add an awl.

Hi thanks for your reply
That what I thought as there is only 1.5mm of space with just the blade removed
This is why I was thinking of the Swiss army scissors
Can't take the credit for this idea, as I saw this on this forum by biker_bob

Thanks for the photo didn't think of that
It really shows clearly how little space there is inside the LM crunch  :like:

A possible alternative might be to remove the blade, move the file to where the blade was, remove the lanyard loop, and insert in the original spot for the file and lanyard loop a pair of new generation Wave scissors - these are two instead of three pieces. From an eyeball measurement I think that might just fit, IF you take almost the entire thumb tab off. You'd have to round the corresponding area off to serve as thumb tab and I am not sure this will be satisfactory. OTOH this should be a straight drop in pivot-wise.
As you noticed, the Crunch is a marvel of engineering and does not have a lot of unused space...

I just saw the wave scissors on Loki-mobile spares post
Looks like the bottom scissor arm is in the way of the crunch locking pin
Might be able to weld a modded lower arm to it
But I do like the idea of using LM scissors will do more research on this one  :like:

I know in the past people sometimes put SOG components in a PST or an origional ST. Would the Crunch's pivot size be the same, being of that age? Scissors, saw and v-cutter could all be options.

I had never looked to see if the PSTII scissors would work  I was just hoping that they would as they would fit the overall look of the Crunch better but looking at the pic you can definitely tell it wouldn't work :ahhh

I've never had a Crunch - that's quite a sexy phillips it's got.

I didn't see a saw/ file holder like the surge has got, I do like that option

The saw/file blade holder of the Surge is nice but at 3.1 (old version) or 3.7 mm (new version) in thickness likely too thick, also you'd have to heavily modify the profile, probably to the extent of impairing the blade lock functions...

In the end I decided to go with Dutch_Tooler idea :tu:
As you can read from the quote above.
I bought some LM wave scissors from loki-mobile
Once the scissors turned up, I started a how to with photos
I have now posted the how to on the mod squad section
