Breaking in REI Topo Skeletool
on: February 11, 2018, 05:48:05 AM
Just bought the REI exclusive Skeletool. One look and I just had to have it! Got a good price too, using my dividend and $20 gift card, came out to about $30. I’ve never owned a coated Leatherman though, and this one seems to be a bit stiffer or grittier on opening. I’m talking about the pliers specifically, opening the tool right now is about as stiff as the last 2 Skeletools I’ve owned. Do the pliers heads smooth out or can I expect them to be gritty because of the coating? And speaking of, does anyone know what the coating is that Leatherman uses? Is it DLC? It already has a lot of “snail trails” right out of the packaging. Thanks for the input!

The coating is more than likely just black oxide, not DLC.

G'day

Congrats on a fine looking Skeletool.

Mine did the same. I used some mineral oil / baby oil in the plier pivot and worked most of the gunk out. Keep going, it takes a while by opening and closing the plier head and adding a few drops at a time. Wipe the dirty oil that comes out of the pivot and repeat until clear. Mine is better but still a little stiff.

The coating is not DLC, just plain 'ol Black Oxide.

Cheers,

Pete

Thank you and chronic as well, I was wondering about what the coating was. Definitely not DLC, as it had “snail trails” right out of the packaging, but I didn’t know what else to call it.
