Gerber Prybrid Utility and Prybrid-X Utility Knife
on: January 21, 2020, 11:30:47 PM
The Gerber Prybrid Utility comes with G-10 scales and I think it would make for a good utility knife.
You can easily replace the blade and it features a pry-bar, nail puller and a bottle opener. It's simple, but it feels like it would get the job done. We're interested in testing it out!

The smaller model, the Prybrid-X Utility knife features around 18" of paracord that you can wear as a lanyard (or Gerber said you could use it in some sort of survival situation). Like the larger model, it also features a bottle opener and pry-bar, This is a light aluminum bodied knife, and it holds a standard little X-Acto blade.

What are your thoughts?

Not sure what to think about that one.

The only use I have for utility blades is box cutting so they fit into the recycling container. Nothing I would EDC  :dunno:

Same. But there are a lot of people who need to use these types of blades regularly for work. Maybe it’s useful in that scenario?

Considering it has a bottle opener I hope it is not aimed towards workforce in a shop. This could encourage an early beer before closing time  :D Beer and box cutters don‘t match very well

Much safer than the Artifact. I got the EAB instead. I might try one of those if the price is right.

I like them... Prybar + Utility blade is a great addition to any MT with little to no redundancy. There are plenty of Ti versions of this kind of tool around, but they are usually short (making the prybar less useful) and bloody expensive. Without knowing the price, I would think that the Gerber version addresses both of those issues.

Though I have one remark. Like with the Centerdrive the pry-end of Prybrid Utility uses the scales as leverage. Granted, unlike the Center-Drive it is G10 here which is fairly tough. Anyone a bit more knowledgeable willing to take a stand whether that is problematic or not?

I like the look of that.  Could come in very handy for a small utility knife tool.  Were there any details on how you change the blade? I hope it's not a scales off job every time.

IIRC correcrtly, you have 3 positions, closed, cutting and all the way out to replace the blade. Really simple design.

Spot on. Similar to an X-Acto knife. But stronger and with the other features listed.

I had a great chat with Gerber and mentioned some of your comments. Eric at Gerber was part of the creation of this tool and he mentioned that the interior holding the blade is solid, and the external scales are strong G-10 but that’s not where the strength is.

Our friends at Gerber are going to send us the tools to try out and test. We’ll make sure to review them!

I have a few small, single piece pry tools -- some steel and another titanium.  I often use these pry tools for digging up things out of the ground, removing pebbles and mud from the soles of boots, and other dirty tasks.  Single piece pry tools are rugged and are easily cleaned after use.

One thing that gives me pause about the new Gerber Prybrid Utility is that the blade sliding mechanism must be kept free of dirt and debris which is incompatible with the way I use a pry tool. Another concern is that it looks like using the pry end can put considerable pressure on the end of the G10 cover and possibly mar or crush it.

That said, the Prybrid Utility looks cool and I am tempted buy one.

I purchased one in green, can't wait. I currently carry a EAB with a different prybar every work day. This looks like a great combo along with my BO surge.  :tu:

I like the looks of the one with the green G10,  but utility knives just do not do much for me!  :( :dunno:
