Day 11

Uneventful day, just a group shot with my two favorite pocket EDC SAK's, the Wenger Traveler and Vic Golfer.

EDIT: Oh, new page, but how do I summon the dancing banana men?! I'm still a newbie!  :ahhh  :D

EDIT 2: Thanks to Ron Who, here are the banana men  :nanadance: :nanadance: :nanadance: :nanadance: :nanadance:

15/30

Nothing much today. Got a Chinese EDC toy in the mail, figured you can't get a capsule lighter wrong, it seems I was right but can't verify because I'm out of good options to fill it with.

Dolphin Brand!  :tu:

Is it actually somehow notable, or you just cracking a joke? I saw that there's actually some products by them people like, but mine wasn't even sold by the brand. Feels pretty good though, solid, not bad at all for the price.

Never heard of them... but if they spelled "dolphin" properly they can't be all bad!

And if you're all bad a brand is a complete waste, so much it ought to count for something I guess.

Now that's what I like about Victorinox. Not only do they have a perfect SAK for everybody, but there's also the perfect SAK for nobody!  :salute:

Outrider Day 10:

This challenge has turned into an exploration of Outrider carry methods, for me. The MOLLE sheath I tried worked, but I didn't like the way it drifted around or could be pulled away from the belt if it snagged on something. I'd use it in a pinch, but it just didn't cut it

The Buck 110 sheath works really well, and would/will prove to be a great way to carry the Outrider.

Now, when it comes to pocket carry, the Outrider does fairly well for me. It isn't as 'dainty' as the OHT, but it seems to do OK. Where it bothers me is when I'm doing some kind of work--snow shoveling has been popular recently. In those cases, the Outrider can fall over sideways, in the pocket, which does cause a bit of binding and pressure. Not a big deal, but over time it could become an annoyance leading to prolonged shelf time.

An0nemus was talking about using a 'caddy' in his front pocket to carry tools and lights; that seemed like a pretty good idea in terms of keeping the Outrider in a vertical, i.e. comfortable, position in the pocket. My older caddy is cut square to fit the back pocket of some jeans, and made from heavy leather. I don't think this approach would work. An0nemus has already tested different caddies and noted that thinner, more flexible caddies seem to work better in the front pocket.

With those thoughts in mind, I started thinking about something shaped a bit better for a front pocket and searched out a different material. I found a product called "Kraft-tex". This is a paper product designed to be a replacement for leather. It's thin, flexible, and claims to be durable. And it's easily sewn. Apparently it is also washable.

So, here is my prototype:

I used some fabric to 'tape' the edges. This isn't necessary, but I thought it might make the whole thing a bit more durable. There is room for a small light or another SAK in the side pocket. I'll see how this one holds up over time. I expect that I'll make some changes. Already I ran into trouble trying to get the fabric seam taping to work and have an idea or two on how I can improve that. I think it's also a bit bigger than it needs to be. I don't want it too small--it should conform, more or less to the shape of the pants pocket--but the caddy's pockets are a tad oversized. And a bit deep. Both the SAK and the light can be retrieved with the caddy in the pocket, but the small lanyard and clip definitely helps with that. A less deep caddy might be more functional.

I'll try to let you guys know how it turns out.  :tu:

I have figured out that I need an Outrider. Sell the Centurion and the DAK. Won’t need those anymore. The Outrider has everything I need on a daily basis.

I hear that. It sort of the Huntsman of the 111mm world. Plus a #1 Phillips.

Being the Devil's Advocate: Do you really need a 111mm Outrider in place of a 91mm Huntsman or a 93mm Pioneer X?

(I'm thinking about this question as I make my way through the challenge.)

I would be fine with only the Outrider and the PX. The PX would be my carry choice when going out n about. The Outrider for work or outside activities.

I could see having a PX as an EDC and the Outrider as a backpacking/fishing knife.

Good question Nix, for me I only have the Outrider and the tool set is right up my alley, I'm used to edcing a Recruit and like the two openers, I like the slide lock but find the blade large for my daily life, and miss the two blades, now the scissors, oh those scissors they're new to me but are now essential and I like the woodsaw. At the midway point I think the Outrider will become a fishing/boat knife, and I'll probably retire the Recruit for a Climber or Huntsman I'm leaning Huntsman

You echo some of my own thoughts.

I love the Climber and find it easier to carry in a pocket....... :climber:

But the Huntsman....oh, my, what a SAK!

I've used my GAK as a sort of super Hiker, probably my favorite tool set, and the challenge has only reinforced this.  I love the heavy duty feel it has, and how nice it carries.  It's been a great time so far!

An honest question isn't spam.
Yes they are lock picks. No I'm not good at it. It's just a cheap travel set and the torsion wrench is too stiff for my taste so I carry another one.
No I'm not police or a locksmith. It's just a handy skill did I use a few times a year maybe.
Most of the time locks that I have to bypass are little more than warded catches that I can jimmy with my MiniChamp for a stiff bit of wire

Here in Texas possession isn't a problem, legal requirement is to prove intent of a a crime. Since I always get permission there's no intent.
