New Leatherman Sheaths
on: January 31, 2018, 02:50:21 AM
While Leatherman is on a holding pattern on new tool innovations, it also appears they have issues with their web developers when adding new products. :ahhh

Was browsing the new nylon sheaths and was considering getting one for the Crunch, one for the Charge TTi, and maybe one for the Flair since I'm using an older PST holster that belongs to another PST.

Seems the newer Nylon Sheath is supposedly available this Spring in Small, Medium, and Large, only Medium and Large are available - unless there is a web page error.

And the new 4 Pocket Nylon Sheath are supposedly available in Medium and Large.

  Last week the new 4 pocket snap sheath was only available in Large. So I wrote Leatherman asking when the Medium would be available. Their CS said they would contact the web development team and get back to me. Today Leatherman CS replied that the Medium was available now, in which it is - and only Medium. There now is no Large to choose from. Makes one wonder who is doing what anymore.

Debating if I should order the Medium now while it is available, or would it show up as being Large instead?  :ahhh

Okay, sent Leatherman a note about both sheath option bugs, no reply as of yet. However the non-pocket on is now available in Small, Medium, and Large, and the 4 Pocket is selectable in Medium and Large.

Did not even get a thank you or anything.  :-\

Has anyone ordered the new snap sheaths yet? Not seen any reviews online or YouTube, and was hoping for something here. Am curious if the New Sheath w/ Pockets if it had an extra elastic are to hold stuff in over the top of a nylon side, or if it s like the old badged type where the elastic pocket it the side material.

Really like carrying the Serac S2 in the pocket of the Charge TTi, but that elastic material does not hold out long before it gets weak and flimsy.

Oh, there is a replacement leather PST sheath for $13, like version 2. Really would MUCH RATHER have the older style of sheaths, version 1 series. :D

Re-read the descriptions. Looks like both sheaths have elastic sides, so ordered one with pockets. And order replacement cutters for a friend's Leatherman. Plumbers... you'd think they make enough money to be able to afford their own replacement cutters!  :twak:

So, it seems like Leatherman may be dropping the yellow "multi tool within a circle" logo?

Never seen it on one of the tools, and I don't think I'm seeing it on any of these sheaths, not even the nylon.

No problem.  I hadn't watched any shot show videos and stumbled upon that one.  It certainly seems as tho LM heard us asking for leather sheaths.

I prefer the old Leatherman Tool Group logo with the T shaped pliers. Personal preference of course, I don't like Nike swoosh style logo.

I've got my share of LM sheaths of all kinds but I guess maybe it's time to put the old leather ones in a safe place and wear out a bit these new ones,

one of the reasons I stay away from LM Nylon sheaths is the lack of snap button. Don't really like velcro   :P

Took them quite a few years to come up with these, but better late than never!   ;)

Have a medium sheath w/ pockets coming in soon. It shipped out today and got some replacement cutters for a friend's ST300 (He doesn't order anything online).

Wanted to get a couple of MUT Phillips/Standard bits but quite honestly  I'm not paying $15 for 3 bits when only 1 of the 3 would be used. Wanted to a longer bit into the K503x knife, and another to use with the Charge TTi. There are times when the normal bits are not long enough for deep recess screws so a longer bit would be most useful. Instead I'll grab a common screwdriver rather than pay $15 for a fancier bit. Heck. I'll go buy a cheap double-sided bit and grind it down on both sides for less.

The leather sheaths would probably do better with the newer snaps. Did not see any newer version sheaths for the PST. The Micro one would of been better if it had a belt clip like the Juice sheaths at the very least. Guess one could use a leather punch and poke two holes in the flap crease and insert a split-ring to use for a different carry option.

Sheath came in today. The snap is good and sturdy, unlike previous snaps on leather sheaths.

Will say I'm not overly impressed with the elastic side pockets, as they are 1.75 inches long - not the length of the sheath like previous cases.
Looking at the sheath the left pocket is predetermined to be for flashlights as it has a loop big enough to slip an AAA battery inside. The tight elastic pocket is flat against the sheath.

Personally, I prefer the flashlight on right side of the sheath, since I carry the MT on the right hip & Maxpedition case on left hip for smartphones. Getting in and out of a vehicle a lot, especially compacts, could mean a smaller flashlight could work its way out of this wider-looped pocket. Something to keep in mind if you cannot attach a wrist lanyard to your light.

Sheath using Serac S2 in dedicated light pocket

Sheath using LED Lenser M5 in dedicated light pocket - AA lights will have to stretch this pocket out to allow ease of re-insertion.

As light as the nylon sheath is, would recommend inserting MT pliers down. Leather sheaths inherently have more sturdiness & hold MTs pliers up or down. YMMV

The inner elastic material appears to be thicker than previous leather sheaths had.

  New Sheath

Previous Charge Badged Leather Sheath - Notice how bad the elastic has gotten over the years. Blek!  :ahhh

The bottoms have changed, there are no more holes.   Never was a fan of those :twak: holes in the bottom, especially when carrying an MTO Charge Saw and other implements in the back pocket.

Side views of the new sheath with a ReCharge TTi inside. - Yes, I know my MT is a bit dirty, it had gotten used a lot. :D

Have not dug out a bit card. They are in the back of the TerraTrike Rover's rack pack where I had been carrying the Skeletool CX for its MT. Not a big fan of carrying a bit card in these sheaths. The bit kit + newer bit adapter is best kept in it's own nylon sheath.

About the only thing that I carrying in the back pocket was an MTO Charge Saw, and a PocketToolX Piranha. Since work has frowned down on large MTs and been okay with the Leatherman Flair I put the Piranha in one of those cheap nylon holsters.

Of the newer sheaths, was hoping the small version would fit the original PST, but the PST is 4 inches long ...  :(  So won't be getting a fancy nylon sheath for the Flair. And these smaller MTs float inside the medium sheath. On the bright side however, the Crunch fits nicely inside the Medium sheath. Might be ordering a single sheath just for the Crunch. :D And I see the small fits the Juice, hmm. Would be a better way of carrying the KF4 over them cheesy clip on sheaths.

  Internal Capacities:
  • Small: 3.25" x 1.25"x .75"
  • Medium: 4.25" x 1.5" x .8"
  • Large: 4.75" x 1.5" x .8"

Lastly, the new snaps seem to be bite/snap/hold like the original sheaths way back in the early years. Use over time however may, or may not, change this. YMMV

Got mine in yesterday with the wave plus, it does not have a rear pocket or side pockets, snap is good, fits the belt ok, no horizontal carry option. Wave and older charge fit good and snug, rebar fit is the best. No extra room to pu tin a croc or pirannah, bit kit at all.

Doesn't the sides have an elastic material, or are the sides nylon?

The sides are semi elastic, you could try shoving in a bit kit but you won't be able to snap it shut. I tried my croc, it barely closes and rubs against the tool going in and out. Will be ordering the pocketed one and a small as well.

Ahh, okay. I have the belt clip on a Charge TTi. Slide the PTX Piranha inside the back flap, and was able to snap the flap - however the snap was not a full positive snap since there was some resistance. The flap snaps better without the Piranha inside - had a full positive contact on all sides. Tried removing the pocket clip with the same results.

So having something like the Piranha in the back, or a thicker bit card is going to put some resistance on the snap - until the flap has some time to stretch. The flap is two ply, so might take some time to break in.

While the sides do stretch, the flap/main 2-ply nylon material does not. Good find stugumby.
