Ancestry DNA Test
on: January 31, 2018, 04:30:10 PM
Hey folks!  Decided to do the Ancestry DNA Test.    Has anyone else done this?

Of course, I question the accuracy and legitimacy of this test but was interested enough to do it.   Long story short, it stated that over half my DNA is from the UK and more specifically, Great Britain.  The rest is broken up across northern and western Europe, with a suggestion (2%)  of central Asian??

Also did quite a bit of research on family trees/genealogy and discovered that my family name originates from Great Britain and was one of the first to come to the new world, settling in Virginia with the first recorded birth of the family name in the new world in 1705.  I've found revolutionary war records along with some old wills and an abundance of census reports.

Then again, this may all be a bunch of bullsmurf.

Anyone else have experience with this?

My hubby is into genealogy, and has had DNA tests. His dad did a bunch of research, and wrote a fairly sizable book on their family tree.

No experience with it but I think Lindybeige on YT is doing a similar experiment

My parents both did it. The results were consistent with what they already knew from genealogy research and family records.

The one intriguing bit of information was that there was some small amount of Neanderthal DNA buried down in those double helices. Which would explain a lot.

Ok, that Patrick Stewart meme is pretty darned hilarious....

I haven't had it done myself, but I am tempted to.  My mother's family was a well established family in Scotland and so they are fairly well documented as to who came from where, at least as far back as is really possible with regular records.  My father's family on the other hand is a different story.  There are at least two possible ancestors that were the first Lamontagnes in Canada, although we aren't certain which one is the line we have followed.  Chalk that up to my father's family being roughnecks, and probably came to the New World in Livestock Class.

No, they weren't cheap, they were probably considered to be barely human, more like humanoid beasts of burden or slightly intelligent farm equipment.  Research shows that we actually came from Switzerland before that, which I thought was cool because I always assumed we were from France.  I'm sure we were liberally spread out among the Alps, so there's a good possibility of both really.

I would imagine the DNA tests are fairly accurate- the science behind it is pretty sound and the folks that do it are answerable to a higher power, so I doubt they would chance a contamination or falsehood.  If they did a bunch of people would dance around their house with flashlights and no one wants that.

Actually my Swiss ancestry is an endless source of amusement to me.  There's a fairly famous Swiss Army Knife dealer (I won't mention his name because he hates me and I find that hilarious too) who claims that I am worthless because I am not Swiss like him.  Except that I am, and even more so since I believe his parents emigrated to Switzerland from Germany in the late 40's or so for some reason or another.

The reality is that we are pretty well all related, and we are all pretty well African because that's where anthropologists almost all agree we came from, and since they are much smarter than me it seems silly for me to disagree.  However, as humans evolved along the way we all developed different traits, and those left permanent markers on our DNA.  By looking at those markers other people (also much smarter than me) can say which markers that are in you are more commonly found in this area, during this time period, in which these types of people were more common.  Voila, your genetic makeup.

And, it's a lot easier to do the further you go back, because people didn't travel and/or intermingle as much as they do nowadays.  A hundred years ago you were hard pressed to find anyone in America that had been to Europe or vice versa, but nowadays it's much harder to find someone that hasn't traveled somewhat.  Hell, you should see the odometer on Whoey as an example!  I've known that guy for almost 30 years and I'm still not 100% sure of everywhere he's gone.

It's good that they have started this cataloging now, as I am not sure it would be possible in another couple of generations, what with all of the travel and cross breeding going on these days.

I'm lucky to have some pretty well researched family trees that I would only be tempted to do the DNA test to find out just what percentage of Viking was lost in the last few generations...   :viking:

Good points, Def!  :salute:

I'm thinking my German grandmothers family must have migrated from Scandinavia. .   Or the Iberian Peninsula 'cause I had higher %  those than German...  but her family had lived in Frankfurt for several generations when my grandfather met her after World War II.

I had already known about the British ancestry on my paternal grandfather side.

Both me and the Mrs were thinking of doing one of those, I only know like 3 generations back, supposedly both my grandfather and his mother and father came over from Italy, bought a house and he built his own right next door. My other side of the family my grandfather and his brother grew up in PA, his brother married twice having 5kids with each, he was a gunsmith who invented some patents even for the gov, but with his drinking problem the gov took them. Other then that I have no clue, the Mrs only knows of a few parts of her family, other then that it’s unknown, so we’d both like to do it some day but it’s expensive..

Funny you should say that because when asked about the Scottish side of the family my grandfather always used to say, "we don't talk about the pirates and horse thieves in polite company."

A good part of me could careless for one reason or another.  Another side of me ( native American side ) cares to an extent.  Its sure interesting as my half brother had his done and he had quite a bit of African.  There is definitely something to the idea we all originated from Africa as non of my family are African Americans so it had to come from somewhere.  Pretty interesting stuff ho I wont have mine done.
