Source for 2.5 and 3 MM threaded pivots?
on: February 04, 2018, 08:54:23 PM
Hello all, I have been throwing around the idea of a 93mm mod for a long time now, and the only thing that is keeping me back is having to drill out all the parts to fit 1/8” pivots. I remember reading a thread for someone placing an order for custom 2.5 and 3 mm threaded pivots (link to thread: https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,41996.0.html)

Is anyone else interested in possibly getting something like this started again?

Would these be stainless steel by any chance? If yes, I'd be mildly interested as well.  :gimme:

I said in the message I sent them that stainless steel would be preferable. No response yet, but I still have my fingers crossed!

Well, a 1/8 inch pivot  (available several places in the US) is 3.125mm. It might be feasible to do the turning and sanding trick to get it down to 3mm but not for the 2.5mm. Here is some https://www.amazon.com/Thin-Brass-Tube-2-5-225/dp/B005WPAZ76/ref=sr_1_88?ie=UTF8&qid=1519759477&sr=8-88&keywords=brass+tube 2.5mm brass tube on Amazon that perhaps could be tapped and fastened with the appropriate screw, but I have no idea if that would work. There is also 3mm and 2mm brass tube on that same page.

Is this still ongoing, or has hit a dead end?
I'd very much like to get my hand on a couple of sets...

A search for "EDM single hole drill electrode" will provide a variety of suppliers for perfectly round metric rods with a tiny center hole in various materials. Brass and copper are very common materials. Relevant sizes for modding purposes usually comes at 0.1mm intervals and sometimes even 0.05mm steps.

The center hole provides some guidance if you want to drill a larger hole suited for tapping, or one  can use a die and make external threads. (That said, threading those sizes is nimble work). Or just peen them..

Edit: Personally I think there will be too little metal left around the hole with internal taps. For example a M2 screw in a ø2.5mm rod just leaves 0,25mm around the edges, while something like a M1.6 screw starts getting very small and weak on its own. And the drills are tiny too - a drill for a M1.6 tap hole is just ø1.25mm.
