CANOES (knife pattern)
on: February 11, 2018, 10:02:43 AM
I noticed that there was no dedicated Canoe thread, despite the interest in the pattern.

Canoes get their name from their distinct shape resembling an old fashioned Canoe.  They are a very aesthetically pleasing pattern.

Commonly they will have two blades on opposing ends, one large and one small, sharing a common spring, making the knife thinner that=n patterns that have both blades on the same end.
The Wenger patriot and Victorinox secretary offer similar look and function.  http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Secretary
You can also find these functions in UK made knives too, but the look is different

They are commonly about 10cm long when closed, though mini canoes are also common.

Buck, Rough Rider make a few.

The pictures show some models by Rough rider, Colt, Indian Head and Buck (all as far as I know made in the same factory, in China).
I bought a few some years ago, but never really carry them.  I may have some more somewhere.

Post more - there must be some US made ones around :)

I have three on the way and will post pictures when they arrive.  Currently I am waiting on a Buck 389, Rough Rider 1571 High Carbon, and Boker 2350.  I am very interested in the Case Gunboat version which seems to be quite a bit larger 4.1 inches and main blade is 3.1 inches.  The blade configuration is a spear, pen, and spey.

The regular canoe is 3.6 inches with a main blade of 2.6 inches.  It has a spear and pen blade.

Then there is the runt of the bunch, Baby Butterbean which is 2.75 inches.  The case version has a spear and pen blade.

Some canoes may have the odd additional tool, though because of their shape you will know a canoe when you see it.

Not sure I would put the SAK into the same category as the Canoe although I see how someone might say the scales have characteristics that make it look like a Canoe.

Canoes are a favorite pattern of mine. Case and Queen make Canoes in the US. Boker and Hen & Rooster in Germany.

There's also an old British Wostenholm 3-blade Canoe with brown bone handles (top left).

The canoe is a very under appreciated pattern. Single spring and 2 blades and carries very well.
Two Queens for the thread.

I forgot about my Baby Butterbean until you mentioned them Spartan.
Here is my stag handled Case Baby Butterbean.
Sorry the pictures are not clearer. My cameras won't take very good pictures.

Saw that one in the knife case at Wal-mart yesterday but couldn’t find a salesperson anywhere.  Maybe my wife called ahead and warned them I was coming.

This was a part of a set, (Holiday Tin), that included a matching Toothpick.  I received as a gift.  Understood they had a selection of different handles as well but never saw them.

I really like this Canoe, the drop point has a harty belly and cuts very well.

I enjoy my tradition folders.

I have the same trouble at our Walmart. It seems like there is never anyone around when I want to buy a knife.

Just scream really loud " I want to buy a knife- I need a knife, right now!!"

That should attract staff :)

..and they wonder why people shop online...

I have found that at many Walmart’s, electronics have a key for sporting goods, so I just make scene there and always get access to what I spied.

When Rough Rider hit the UK market a good number of years ago the one that made me stop and take notice was their white bone Canoe.  Still have it and still like it, though it's no longer my go-to traditional pattern knife.  If I remember I'll dig it out and snap a pic or two with some decent light.

Stock pic to keep you going in the mean time.
