Thinking about this minimalism thing. Who’s tried it, who likes it, who’s been successful at it? Any tips on how to start? Haha

Are we talking minimalism in general or from a EDC viewpoint?

I like the concept of having your needs met by a few well considered things. I just haven't found a few things that meet all my needs yet. So I'm very positive in theory, but not able to do so in practice. I guess that makes me a tried but failed, and that I have no tips worth listening too  :D

It hasn’t worked for but only because I’ve tried to miniaturize as well and I do need on occasion a full size tool. So maybe for your purpose try a full size tool that has what you need?

There were also some things I just couldn’t give up like a dedicated knife. Hard if you have developed a fondness for something.

I have done a fair amount of reading/watching stuff on it, and...

If I understand correctly, the point is to simplify your life by not having your stuff eat up all your time. You're not constantly cleaning stuff, or having to work more hours to maintain stuff, etc.

So, I agree that you should own your stuff, and that your stuff shouldn't own you. But Minimalism, and particularly the '100 items' version of it seems to be taking it from good, functional idea, to 'let's see how stupid we can get'.

I have been... 'lucky' enough that I've had to move every so often. I find that there's nothing like moving to help you ditch all the crap you don't need/want.

If you're going to do it, maybe start like that. Imagine you've got to put all your stuff in a big truck and haul it across the country. If you don't like something enough to put that much effort into it, get rid of it.

I DO have to say that minimalism and multitools play well together. One thing that does a lot of functions. Very neatly minimalist.

Now see, minimalism would be combing those tools into one tool, if I understand it right.  ;)

That is a good point about moving. I always end up with less stuff after a move. I’ll think about it that way. Maybe tackle room by room so I don’t overwhelm myself. The simplifying my life is what piqued my interest. I have not heard of the 100 items version. I already know I would not do well with that. My multitools, and knives would probably take at least 30% of that.

Agreed. Artificial limits like this are for, well, idiots who can't really manage complicated thoughts. I have books I haven't cracked in a couple years, but I had to pull out three of them this morning to figure something out. I have CDs that I have had in a binder for ten years becuase I can recover the HDD when I kill a computer- but if I kill me computer all the way, I still have those and I don't have to wonder if the terms of service on some download service is going to change. I've got a couple Isreali dressings that I got three years ago, and thankfully, I haven't needed them- but they are in the medical box where I can grab them without digging. Oh, and I have two fire extinguishers.

Hundred things, I have more tylenol than that!

And with that said, everything I own, including furniture I have in storage at my folks, fits into a normal sized U-Haul, those are what, 15, 17 feet long? And it would give me room to spread out my sleeping bag at night, and put my cooler and my camp stove up front for when I get hungry. (rest stops, not while driving) I could move me, my knives and tools and firearms and ammo hoard and clothes and computers and books and... actually, there is nothing else except my car. And that hunk of junk would be dragged behind.

Pretty sure my life is already simplified. At least from a material point of view.

Of course, for people who insist on only owning 100 things, if we remove their redundant kidneys and lungs, those lucky stiffs can have one hundred and TWO things to their name.

I'm minimalistic already. Had to throw another rat on the wheel to get enough electricity to run the WiFi AND the tablet at the same time.

I'm very minimalist in my life. This extends to all areas of my life.  It started for me some years back and has gradually become a "normal" state of being.  I don't collect stuff so that side of it is easy and I've just dealt with day to day stuff by getting rid of stuff I don't ever use.

My house is tidier, and I have more money (because I spend less).  Life is still fun too.  :salute:

I was fine with minimal carry for about 35 years.  Then I found MTO and discovered that I needed to carry a multitool, a SAK, a dedicated knife, a flashlight, and so much other stuff that it no longer all fit in my pockets so I had to have an EDC bag of some sort.  :pok:  Thanks guys.
