I am obsessed with portable power.
I personally believe that the modern cell phone (especially a smart phone) is the best piece of safety equipment that you can purchase and carry, but battery life on them is always going to be an issue. And, even if they aren't needed for safety, they are always handy for taking pics and teasing your friends who may still be at work. Then there are GoPros, flashlights, GPS units and other devices that people may want or need to bring into the field for whatever reason, and the question becomes how to keep them running for more than a couple of hours?
Battery banks are a great option in many cases, but are a temporary solution at best simply because they only hold existing power and also can't be recharged. Because of this, I like my
BioLite stove and the newer generation seems to have addressed many of the problems I had with the original. Additionally, there's the Basecamp model for even more power.
More recently I have been following a Canadian design team as they develop the WaterLilly, a turbine based charger that works in the wind or the water.
https://www.waterlilyturbine.com/index.htmlJust drop the thing in the water and the current turns the turbine to charge whatever device you have, or a power bank for other devices. Or, you could mount it on a bike or canoe and charge things up as you move.
It's not an ideal thing, as it requires either wind or flowing water to work, but I still think it looks pretty cool and I may have to get one to try out. I like that, unlike the Bio Lite, this one can be used while unattended, and doesn't require vast amounts of fuel to work.
