Time for a MP400 refresh?
on: February 13, 2018, 04:22:44 PM
Leatherman has finally made the switch to their most popular line, by adding replaceable cutters to the Wave/Charge. SOG now has the PowerAccess which is like a PPP with all outside tools and a pocket clip and this year added a Deluxe version (minus pocket clip since it is bigger). Ever Gerber seems to have taken a look at their flagship models and made adjustments, first with the MP600 by adding a huge OHO knife and "centerdriven" bit driver, and now with the Suspension by spinning it into two new and improved tools.

So now, one has to wonder - will Gerber give the CenterDrive treatment to the versatile MP400 CompactSport? It has always been perfectly sized for pocket carry, but without a pocketclip, that is not optimal for a lot of people. Making the blade and scissors OHO would be a nice touch. As would perhaps sacrificing one of the 3 flat drivers and/or can opener for something a little more geared towards street carry (package opener, file, pick, tweezers, etc...). And of course throw a nice deep carry pocket clip. I would prefer the pliers be spring loaded, but I know some don't like that. I don't know, just spit-balling.

I guess you could argue that they had this tool with the Octane, but it was not executed well and really was no comparison to the MP400. But some of the elements would translate nicely. That bottle opener on the Octane is great (still carry my Octane a lot) and did not take up any space in the channels for other tools.

I also think Gerber lacks in that particular niche,
the MP800 and MP700 would do that (OHO blade, scissors, spring loaded pliers, comfy grip, file, etc.) but were bulky and non pocketable...

I'd love to see a revamped version of these, Gerber MPs lack pocket clips!!  :salute:

I think the main reason the multipliers doesn't have pocket clips are because the pliers slides out. If the mount the pliers up, then those needle nose would be pointing upwards. Octane have 2 version. One can be flicked from the retracted position, another version, it's locked in the retracted position. You have to hold down the 2 buttons to slide out the pliers manually.

Is this a challenge for another OHO mod..

I'm not sure you can improve on the 400. Not bothered about a clip or oho or even outside opening tools as all of those would compromise on the existing design which is a pretty great one. I like that the pliers can be deployed with one hand and find this really useful.

Zoidberg proves me wrong  :tu:

Easy enough to mod a knifeless, but BN sounds good.

Everything can be improved 😁 I'd not want all tools outside opening, but similar to a CenterDrive set up. They could figure out someway for a pocket clip to work on these out-the-front style pliers. Octane was not great, but they improved the design late in the production run.

I think a knifeless version would be a good offering, and the parts are already freely available for doing the mod that me, Gareth and Kirky did. A bluntnosed option would be nice too, as that hasn't been offered on the 400 chassis before.

No evaporating carbide cutters please!

I should stop procrastinating and put a file or something in my MP400. I hardly use the blade anyway

Agreed! It's easier to carry an additional pocket knife, than carry an additional pocket file.

Which saw is that?
Top (longer) one is from Diesel, bottom (shorter) one is from a Suspension.
