Need Help Dating/Identifying SAK
on: February 15, 2018, 12:55:54 AM
My wife confiscated this Victorinox from a kid a long time ago at her summer camp. I've cleaned it up a bit and sharpened it. The most interesting thing I find about it is the lack of toothpick and tweezers. Does anyone have any info about theis "Nation Ski Patrol" SAK? Thanks

Someone better than me will be along shortly to help, but will probably ask if there's a file on the phillips driver.

There's a thread called 'Something to help you date your vic SAKs based on tool Evolution', with an evolving spreadsheet that can help you determine the approximate age of it if nothing else.
I think this link should take you to the post with the most current version of that spreadsheet.

At very least, it looks like it's pre-1983. Very nice.

Its an early version of the Hiker.  Can't help with the date.

National Ski Patrol knives show up on occasion on ebay, and always seem to go for a primium. Nice score!   :tu:

Garza,

I'm no expert, however, it does appear to be a 44-some-odd year old Hiker.

Let me walk my logic backwards...

If the snap ring attaches to a receiver that is a shim, rather than a full backspring in and of itself, that's pre 1991-ish

The four lines of lettering, including the word 'rostfrei' and the normal size V in Victorinox helps, too, but tells us it's pre '87 (85?) or so.

Only you can tell this, but if the bottle opener does not have a half-stop, meaning it does not stick open at 90 degrees before being fully opened, it's earlier than about 1985.

Flip the knife so we can see the symbol on the other side of the tang. Someone else here can tell a lot by that. There is even a chart about the symbology somewhere.

Personally I'm not clear when the Phillips head screw driver went from square to round cross section but I'm sure it was before the 80's.

Here are the two big ones for me at least...

The solid awl without sewing eye leads me to believe it is 1974 or earlier.

If there is a snap ring instead of a bail, then I think it's after 1968 or so.

So...1968 -1974? -ish.

Jazz, I think, is a real expert on dating based on these types of details.

Me and another MTo member tried to return a (TSA confiscated) SAK to some kid once. I managed to track down the original owner which was quite easy since his (rather unusual name) was printed on the scales. I tried to contact him on Facebook but he never replied...

Looks to be a National Ski Patrol Hiker model from c. 1980, give or take a few years. NSP and the Hiker model go way back - I've seen NSP branded Hikers from the early 60s up through the mid 80s. Lots of different versions too, so they must have been having them made pretty regularly.

Thanks for the help everyone. And for the record the kid was not practicing knife safety skills when my wife confiscated it. She did forget to give it back at the end of camp but it has a good home.
