I've a couple Scandinavian knives; love 'em! A few Scandinavian-inspired knives as well.

My Norwegian grandmother (Mormor) gave me this HELLE when I was 13 or 14 years old (making it around 38 years old). My second fixed-blade and first Scandi. I'm not sure what she was thinking giving a 13 year-old an 8.5" Sami knife, but you weren't ever gonna hear me complain. I think it caught her eye when she was visiting Norway and she just couldn't resist it.

This knife is made with HELLE's laminated steel and it stays amazing sharp. I've only cut myself with it two or three times, but I can still tell y'awl it gets wicked sharp.

That was quite a gift. At 13 I would have really loved getting a knife like that. It must really bring back some great memories.

It is a really cool knife!  :like: :tu: :tu:

I think I was about 9-10 or so when I got my first one. It was only 7 inches though, so much safer of course :P I've actually never cut myself on it - too aware and worried about the potential for slipping I think.

That is a good looking one.  :tu:

these are all excellent cutters but a common denominator in almost all of them is the lack of guard or cover between the handle and the blade.

I know I know, responsible use and common sense go first, but these blades sure were intended to be occasionally used on animals and game, getting covered in blood and fat, thus making them slippery. ???

Scandinavia, Finland, Norway... in such cultures and countries of origin falling snow, ice and water abound so it's not a rare occurence to have the knife covered in snow (melting into water with your hand's heat) while you're using it. Another thing making it potentially dangerous without a guard
That's my initial impression at least.

Please enlighten me

Please enlighten me

I find one of the most intriguing elements of knife design is that all knife designs involve some element of compromise. Seen another way, most knife designs have some degree of specialization. And so many knife designs have evolved to become highly specialized. A good boning knife will not serve well as a Chef's knife.

Some knives are a little more 'general purpose' than others, but that involves some element of compromise. And I think that's why I've ended up owning more knives than I really need. I see some advantage to one design or another, and then find I have to try it out.

While some Scandi knives do have guards, many don't. I have found that a guardless knife can be very handy and allows one to choke up on the grip to allow better control and power in cutting with the heel of the blade. I suspect this is one reason many traditional Scandi knives don't have a guard.

In addition, Scandi knives often have a nice bit of palm-swell. This palm swell is relied on to protect the hand from slipping forward and work well. The HELLE Lapplander I posted above doesn't have much palm-swell, and it could be fairly easy to slip up onto the blade. But it isn't designed to be a poking/stabbing tool. It can poke, but it's really designed for cutting or even small chopping. When used like that, the forces involved don't translate into a slipping motion. Notice that there is some pommel swell to help prevent the knife from slipping out of the hand when chopping.

So the handle is actually well thought out and functional. But, yeah, care does need to be taken.

This Spydie Puukko is a great example of a highly configured handle (with textured G-10) that provides a really well indexed blade and secure grip. For poking/stabbing, the pommel can be wedged into the palm of the hand, thereby preventing the hand from slipping forward. Really comfortable and smart grip.

HELLE exploring some alternative handle options, to include a bit of an integral guard.

Both of these are very comfortable to use in a variety of grips. I got 'em locally at a store specializing in hiking/camping gear. The HELLE knives are popular for being lightweight for their size and nice looking, too.
