these are all excellent cutters but a common denominator in almost all of them is the lack of guard or cover between the handle and the blade.

I know I know, responsible use and common sense go first, but these blades sure were intended to be occasionally used on animals and game, getting covered in blood and fat, thus making them slippery. ???

Scandinavia, Finland, Norway... in such cultures and countries of origin falling snow, ice and water abound so it's not a rare occurence to have the knife covered in snow (melting into water with your hand's heat) while you're using it. Another thing making it potentially dangerous without a guard
That's my initial impression at least.

Please enlighten me

You seem quite enlightened already. Slipping and cutting your own fingers is indeed the main issue with these knives, and it does happen way too often. I suspect some of the sales of traditional smaller Helle style knives are also due to them being decorative parts of traditional outfits. (Then often blinged up with silver here and there).

As the slip and cut problem is well known some manufacturers offers various designs with guards. (A requirement for the military edition). The guard does mess up the tight fit into the sheath though, and the sheath then need some other way to retain the knife.

OK, thanks for the replies foks.
Even with no guard, I can see how a contoured grip or a specific swell in the handle would prevent slippage.  :salute:

And I am also aware about intended use and stabbing with a hand or thumb in the flat pommel,
but I was thinking more about those super slick/polished handles on some Puukos, made of very smooth non grippy material (unlike textured micarta, G10, rubber or plastic) that you often see around.

They have no guard, straight no swell handles, no contouring or finger grooves...they seem like dangerous stuff to me   :ahhh   a few examples here

American designer/maker Koyote's interpretation of a Leuku:

Great handle. The primary bevel is slightly convex, not flat, but it still uses much like a Scandi grind. The drop edge is nice, too. That tiny bit of drop edge and ricasso give a little protection from sliding up onto the edge, but still allows a nice choked up grip.

My scandi's. At least the ones I could find now.
The bottom 2 are Brusletto Hunter.
The little one is a Brusletto "tourist/gift" knife.
The one still in the box is a Haugrud Birkebeiner knife, which I think is too nice to use.

Fantastic knives in here folks.   I've got a good number of Scandinavian knives but I need to take some new pictures.  A question though; I've got knives from Sweden, Finland and Norway, but I think I'm lacking anything from Denmark.  Any makers I should be looking at?

Gareth,

I picked this one up during a trip to Denmark. Made by a Danish maker, but I don't know who now....

3.25" blade of laminated steel. Burl wood handle, but I'm not sure of the wood, perhaps Walnut. Very comfortable in hand.  :tu:
Odd dimensions give it a bit of a runty look, but it works nicely as a small blade. I'll EDC it today along with my Vic Outrider, but it would probably pair better with an Ambassador or Classic.
