Gerber MP400 refreshed version.
on: February 21, 2018, 04:52:37 PM
The Gerber MP400 is a great tool. Some simple mods to bump up the functionality.  :D

I wanted to stow the pliers entirely into the handles. Took off as little as possible from the tip. Not more than 5mm. To achieve this, the slotted track is filed downwards to enable it to slide further in.

Still looks like a needle nose to me..  :)

The weakness of this sliding design is that the tools are very stubby to accomodate the retracting pliers. The frame of the MP400 only allows 2 long tools. I added in another 2 longish ones. Scissors was moved to the "short tool"slot.

And with my recent fetish with one handed opening, Switch out the blade with one with a thumb stud for easier opening. Initially wanted to make it bladeless by using a file to replace the blade. But really like the look of the new blade so decided to leave it there... fpr now..

 :D

Lovely mod Sam  :salute:

Do you have pics of the channel you've extended please? (so I can nick your idea  :D )

My BO MP400 has 3 longer tools in it - scissors, file (from MP600), and woodsaw (from Suspension).

Neat job on the pliers too - you'd be hard pressed to tell they were any different   :like:

I could have gone lower, but that would further jeopardise the length of the internal tools.

The Suspension is a great tool to steal parts from. Most are long tools and, they are cheap...

Cheers.

Longer reach and no more holes in the pockets.  ;)

Theres actually a way to "lock" the pliers in the stowed position for those guys that have a habit of pocket carry. So far I have only seen it implemented in Octane.

Further improvements added.  :D Something thats badly needed on a pocket sized tool.

Still in prototype stage but coming close to finishing. But it works. Lanyard added for quick extraction. Going to switch out the blade for a file and pocket carry these few days and see how it goes. smurfty knife laws here..

Enjoy.

Discreet deep riding in the pocket.  ;)

I dun know.. Hmm. Have to think about it. I have never really carried a sak before. I would really like to have a thicker blade. I do have my wave back at work. Normal days, I always have a Micra. So in a way I am quite well covered.

I may do a bit of reprofiling work to the plier. Its not bad in any way. Its just that it like right in the middle of a full size plier and a needle nose. I would really like to have a finer tip like a pst.

Hey Sam,
Have you considered filing the side of the  lock pad on the clip side to be flush to the side of the handle?
That is a fantastic tool as it is!  Just thought I'd throw two cents in if it may help. Tell me to hush if it is a bad idea.

That is actually a great idea. There was a time I considered doing it for an earlier pocket clip mod as it was in the way. But it quickly gets forgotten. I think I will do just that. On the other hand, I am a bit worried inside is hollow and it will leave some unintended gap..

There also an easy way to attach a leatherman kick pocket clip to a mp400. I decided against it as I that clip did not ride deep enough. Anyone interested, I can post it up.

Cheers!

I guess the best way (I can think of) would be to make the clip side of the slider 'ramp up' and slightly flatten the apex, then ramp down the other side. This would allow for seamless pocket insertion and removal in theory. Maybe that would leave enough slider to be aesthetically pleasing and functional as well.

It's definitely not.  :) Thanks to gerleatherberman for the idea.  :salute:

Did a few modification on it today... Above was one.  ;)

A major change to the pliers head. I have to admit I went a bit too far on this one. I was trying out something else but didn't work out. So I have to ground down quite a bit to correct the error.. Quick dip in acid to dull back the pliers to match the handles.

Another modification was to add a locking notch so that the needle tip does not slide out and stab me when I sit or squat down. Its on the opposite side of the clip. So when I pull out the baby, my thumb will be right at the spot to unlock it.

Cheers! Thanks everyone for the positive inputs!  :multi:
