Solving problems you didn't know you had in the most obscure way possible

"And now, it's time to hand this over to our tame race axe driver. Some say, he can live in the forest for six months at a time without food, and he knows of a secret tribe of only women where he is their God. All we know is, he's call the Styx!" - TazzieRob

I did play D&D when I was younger (and then AD&D when there was a difference) but the one that I ended up playing far more was Warhammer Fantasy.  Still has the same basic tropes of elves, monsters and whatnot, but in a far gritter and darker world than any I played with D&D.
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

Can I be Optimus Prime?

Bad news. Someone already transforms into a semi truck. BUT... you could transform into a photoropter, and be... (wait for it...)... Optometrist Prime!

I worked REALLY hard on that bad of a joke.
I'm glad you decided to go for it Lynn - 'Twas a Bold Move, and it just about paid off. 20 comedy xp's for you!

Maybe I'll be Megtron instead then.

Unless I could transform into a gaily dressed seventeenth century gentleman. Then I would be........................

There's got to be a time zone sweet spot.  I'd be up for a bit of d&d

I played a PBEM game for some years (yup, that's right). It went out pretty well. The dice rolling was made by the GM. This way, everything was less chaotic.

The GM would describe a scene and we'd say what we would like to do. When everyone had "spoken", the GM would resolve the scene, describing what happened.

Sometimes, he would ask someone to clarify an action or take another, because something happened that made the previous intended action impossible/meaningless.

We can have a "dry run", just to see if we get the hang of it...

Let's do this! As long as dks isn't the dungeon master, a role he would take far too literally.

The TLDR:
The easiest way to start is the get the D&D Starter Set
The more complete way is to get a copy of the Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, Monster Manual, a couple sets of dice, pencils, paper, and 2 to 5 people.
We did that a couple of years back (3.5e was fairly new I believe). 4 players (2 experienced but first time D20) and a fairly fresh DM.

DM (reads flavor text): And a large mirror with a silver detailed frame on the east wall...
Later, Gang is leaving the Dungeon, not having taken a scratch thanks to brilliant strategy and cooperation.
Players: Oh, and we take the mirror
DM: Its not listed under loot.
Players: So?
DM: You can't remove it!
Players: Why?
DM: It's broken...
Players: you can't just break it...
DM: Ok, you can take it
Even later, DM looks up value of Mirror... its worth 1000x* whatever else you have looted in the dungeon

* Ok, I can't remember how much it was worth but it was an insane amount compared to what was supposed to be the loot.
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

Lol!

We used to wind our DM up. After a very profitable Runequest campaign, we put all our earnings into buying and operating a cake shop instead of starting a new quest. Did it for a few weeks until we got bored, and bless our DM he didn't get a horde of Dwarves or Goblins to burn it down around our ears - he let us get it out of our system.

Maybe interested parties could add their name to a DM list and then select randomly? If there are a few people interested we could do a rota?

Not very good at DMing. As for character, I can play anything the party needs.
