CRKT Technician and Bivy Photo Comparison
on: February 24, 2018, 02:59:51 PM
Just received the CRKT Technician and Bivy. The quality seems to be fairly good at the price point on both. The Technician was bigger and heavier that I had imagined.
The Technician is 11.5oz. Only 0.9oz lighter than the LM Surge, but with much less capability. It has a short blade, good 1/4" bit driver (though it is a double end long bit, so basic hex bits will sink in and not be usable), a sharp scraping tool/chisel, gap gauge tool (.6-1.8mm / .020-.080", a telescoping magnetic pic up tool(doubles in length), and a double sided file (not aggresive and borderline poor machined) with a bottle opener and a poorly places wire stripper at the tang. The pliers are nice looking and appear beefy.
None of the tools lock, but just snap into place with a spring bar.

The Bivy is cool, but very very thick. The pliers pop out with a push of a switch and are of decent quality. The partially serrated blade is tanto style, with strange serrations with a decent liner lock. The three other tools are a bottle opener/medium flat head screw driver, poorly formed #1 flattened phillips driver, and a short "marlin spike" that would be good for untying knots in paracord or ropes (and even hitting those recessed reset buttons on routers and modems).
The Bivy weighs 7.428oz, so there are tons of superior tools at the weight point. But, the bivy is made for climbers who may need pliers and a blade OHO that does not take up as much pocket/pack space as a standard MT platform.
I will add some measurements later when I can bring my calipers home from work. Any questions about either tool, please let me know. :)

Now, for those of us who like pics, here are some pics. Some pics are with the Technician with the Surge. It is BIGGER than the Surge!

thanks much for the pics and overview,

initially I had high hopes for this tool but now I see I could never get past of the non-locking implements and humongous size,  :P especially having the Surge and other option available and time-tested

hope you enjoy yours!!  :salute:

Thanks for the pics!
Could you please measure how long the telescoping magnet is when fully extended?

Damn the technician is a big multi, I'm a fan of the Surge, but at that size the techy is too big!  :ahhh

You're welcome and thank you! It is a collector piece more than anything I'd use. Might try it at some point for fun though. :)

You're welcome! It is a tad short of 5". Not something I'd want on an MT, but kudos for CRKT for trying something new. :)

Thanks for the pics mate.

Thank you! I didn't either, but stumbled upon it looking for a deal on the Bivy.  :multi:

For what it is, the size is absurd! The handle splay is ridiculous as well. Def a collector piece more than a user.

Great review, I have both tools as well and still can not believe how massive the handles are on technician. I can easily palm a basketball and still find this thing to be a beast.

Thank you, pa_strunk. Indeed, this thing is a big ole' hunk of steel. Reminds me of the Gerber Freehand. Huge and not well thought out.
If only the tools locked and it was 30% smaller, CRKT would have had a cool MT.
