I continue to be impressed by BRK knives.


I took a BRK "Canadian Camp" with me while staying in a Forrest Service cabin during a late Fall elk hunt. The cabin had a wood burning stove for heat and cooking. Since there had been a lot of snow recently and temps were expected to be well below freezing, I knew we'd be running that stove in the evenings. I knew the Canadian Camp [CC] would be handy for some kitchen tasks as well as fire prep. And, it might even be useful if we actually got our elk.




Sure enough the CC got pressed into service the first night. We had come back from the woods, cold and a little wet, to find a frozen cabin. The CC did a great job breaking down pre-cut, but huge, logs into kindling. The large blade and big handle allowed for rapid shaving of nice curls off smaller pieces of wood. At one point my hunting buddy (not very experienced in the ways of making fires) was a little shocked to see me pounding on the CC's spine while battoning through some big logs.

In addition to making three fires, the CC also got used to cut up some potatoes and carrots for dinner. No battoning required.

You can see here that the knife got fairly dirty, mostly with resins from the wood processing:




I sat down today to clean and sharpen it. I assumed that after all the pounding through wood, it would need at least a touch-up on a stone.....but first I tested it on some fine magazine paper:






It was still razor sharp! Sliced thin paper effortlessly.

Now, I like A-2 tool steel, but this was pretty impressive edge retention. Good job with the heat treat, BRK!

After a well-earned rubdown with some alcohol and a light stropping the CC was clean and shaving sharp:




I've been a fan of this knife for a while now, but it really earned a place in my heart with this most recent performance. Nice design, nice execution, nice performance. I couldn't ask for much more.   :tu:

The cabin was cold and droughty. Windows were cracked. The mice outnumbered the inhabitants by 4 to 1. It was dark and dingy and not terribly clean.

However, it did keep us warm and dry as long as the stove was full of burning logs.  :D

To the contrary, the Canadian Camp was pure joy.   :tu:

O1 and A2 have been great steels for my use.  Razor sharp edges can be obtained and kept.  Boy it sure looks cold out there burrr.
