Help me choose.
on: February 23, 2018, 03:24:06 PM
I have a birthday coming soon and was thinking I should get myself a OH Trekker. I already have an 08 Soldier and love it so a OHT would be for the most part a spare in case something happens to my Soldier.

As I was shopping for the best deal I would see the Rangergrip 178 and thought to myself "I really need one of those also"

I can only get one for now and it well probably be my Last SAK purchases for a while.

Which one would you get? And why?

Jeep the SAK of the auto world or is it SAK the Jeep of the Knife world?

Given those two options, I personally would get the OHT, even though you basically already have one (though maybe you could get the non serrated trekker for a little difference).

The reason I say this is because at 130mm, the Ranger series are really large knives and for the kind of usage I would do, if I need a knife that large I would want a fixed blade.

It's really all down to preference though, no right or wrong answer
If the trees blew down the wind and no one was around, would the alphabet song really go backwards?

I'm of a similar mind as gustophersmob

I have a Rangerwood 55. Great knife, but has moved out of the 'pocket knife' category for me, and so it doesn't get carried all that much. It's bigger in every dimension than a Buck 110.

On the plus side, you do get a substantially bigger blade, with a profile I like a bit more, in the 130mm series. And the 130mm saw is really nice. Really nice.

The cap lifter/driver on the OHT is bigger and more robust. It also has an active lock (liner lock), whereas the smaller cap lifter/driver on the 130mm Rangerwood has a passive lock (locks under pressure) inherited from Wenger.

Both knives have their virtues, but I carry the OHT 5-6 x more frequently.

I am having similar dilemma as you for a while. But i will get for me rangergrip 79, because of nonserated blade. I also have Soldier 08, very nice knife for EDC, but for hiking i think rangergrip 79 is much better.
Since you also have Soldier 08, and OH Trekker is almost the same,i recomend rangergrip. I think is better to have 2 different knives for different ocassions, than a back up knife. If you decide to get OH Trekker, get the nonserated variant.
