Yup that's a 400. It looks like it needs some tlc. The pliers will need filing but that means they'll sit nicely inside the chassis without protruding.  Also the blade looks like it could do with a reprofile.

Whatcha gonna do with it sync?

Looking at my MP400, I believe I know where each part goes.
From your pics I can see that one lock tab still has its spring attached. Can you put the other big spring back into the handle?

I can take pictures showing where everything goes, and label the parts in your pics to help put it back together.

Here's a diagram. Kind of.

I noted the order of the tools for each handle.
The two small springs go in the two pins, which are placed at the sides of the pliers, and are pushed outwards, to lock the plier to the deployed position.
The two thin oval pieces are attached to the outside, with their open end towards the pliers. These keep the pliers in the handles. The two pins push against these. Second picture.
The tiny points on the washers go in a slit in the handle, to prevent them from spinning, and eliminate clumping.

Clean it up, put it back together, try it out and decide the OHT is better.  ;)

Thanks!  :hatsoff:
I think I have a pretty good idea of how it fits together. The two big springs are intertwined in my pics.

looks like a fun project, not really complicated and the tool is in heavily used condition
but like an AK47 in pieces, once assembled it should be kickin' and in working order...for a lots of years to come :D

The only thing I'd say for reassembly is make sure you have the tabs on the spacers/washers in the right place. That, and the stupid springs under the plier buttons were the only hard part in reassembly for me.

I've done a strangely large amount of tool disassembly/reassembly lately, and it's a weirdly (usually) calm kind of zen pass time. Until a little spring goes flying across the room into carpet. :D

Any tips for getting the clips back on the pliers? I realise there is a notch in the handle for getting the button in.

I just slip the closed end of the clip around one stud on the side and press the open end over the other stud.  :tu:

Here's Lynn's illustrated guide for MP600 reassembly. :D (hope the pics show up for you. They're in photobucket, so...)

They went together quite easy - only took a couple of seconds to get each one on. I'm not sure I trust them to stay on though...

They go on a lot easier if you just push them down over the carriage, rather than try to slide them along. Don't try to use the slot, that's just there to let the clips flex open. I've switch plier heads several times, and never had a problem with clips coming undone unless I've forced them to.

I have cleaned it up as best as I can:
 - Soaked in white vinegar (didn't seem to remove much rust), scrubbed with a toothbrush.
 - Sprayed with CRC (similar to WD40), scrubbed with a toothbrush.
 - Sanded with 1200 grit sandpaper. The insides of the handles were hard to get at properly.
 - Polished with 0000 steel wool.

Here's a dry fit:

I hope I have everything in the right position.

This is looking pretty darn good.

As for having trouble getting into the handles to sand, I had best luck with using a small block of wood that was a bit narrower than the inside handle slot, when i did my Micra clean-up. It worked wonderfully. That was with 600 and 2000 automotive wet/dry sandpaper wrapped around the block of wood.

It would still be hard to get into the area around the hinge on the handles, but would save SOME time, I think.

It looks like one of the plier jaws is broken off a bit? You plan to cut the other one down to match?

Yes, and I will also see what I can do with the blade.

I thought about using sandpaper around a small block of wood for the inside of the handle but couldn't be bothered! I just used folded sandpaper.

What's the best way to tighten up the pivots (without getting one of Loki's wonderful wrenches)?

I should have a PE blade here somewhere and a wrench.

I just used pliers and vice grips.

As for the blade, I personally recommend if you have a dremel, using a metal cutting wheel to cut down the backside of the blade to the point, like a clip-point or almost wharncliff. I've tried reshaping the tips, and I've tried just cutting the blade down from the back, and cutting it from the back is much faster. Guess it depends on the shape of the tip you want, though. If you DO cut it down with a metal cutting wheel, take care not to overheat the blade to mess up the temper though. I did a little at a time, maybe 2mm, let it cool, then cut more.

Also... nice of you, zoidberg!  :salute:

That was my thinking too. I don't have anything like a dremel so I might try with a half-round file.

Do you have a hacksaw? I think that'd be faster than a file.

Some progress.... I started with an angle grinder (slowly with a cut-off disc) and finished with a file.

Not quite the shape I wanted on the pliers but better to quit while I am ahead:

I gave the blade a rough sharpen to get the nicks (nearly) out. Trying to get a concave shape on the back is harder than I imagined:

Perhaps I just go for straight on the back.
