Who uses a Hori Hori garden Knife?
on: March 06, 2018, 04:17:04 PM
It is a Japanese, soil or garden knife. They are especially useful for container gardening, planting bulbs, cutting and separating roots or sod, and are also popular with the metal detecting guys. It's sort of a cross between a digging trowel and a knife. Hori Hori translates in Japanese to dig dig because the Japanese find it amusing to name something in a cartoonish manor after what it actually does.

Anyway, I really want one, but I'd like to hear from anyone who uses them what your thoughts are about them and if they are really all that useful.  Right now I'm most likely to get the Fiskars Hori Hori, because it is stainless steel, has a full tang, Fiskars guarantees it for life, and they are available at the Home Depot near me for around $25.00.  That seems to be an average price for the several brands that I can find on Amazon but then you have to add shipping.

I have one and when I am planting new things it is very great :like: Cuts through soil and roots like nothing  I was tired of bending those flimsy trowel type ones and found one of these for a good price ( I now have 2 ;) ) It has been 3 years of fairly hard usage  our soil can be rough depending on where I dig :ahhh So I recommend one for sure :like: :like:

I have two.  Great item to have if you garden.

Any thoughts on the Fiskars hori hori?  It's fairly new to the market and you won't even find it on Fiskars web site.

I like anything Fiskars as it usually holds up pretty well :salute: I have had a pair of pruning shears from them for a few years and they have lasted very well  It is a big reason why I haven't bought a pair of more high end shears  :D The Hori Hori that you have pictured looks like it will play the part very nicely and looks nicer than the one I have plus you have the warranty :tu:

I picked up the Fiskars at Home Depot this afternoon. I will try to get some pictures of it in use tomorrow.

I have some telescoping-handle Fiskars loppers that are rubbish.
But I want one of these Hori Horis.

I could use a Hori Hori. I don´t have one yet, been using a cheap no-brand tanto instead. It hit a few rocks as you can see.

I'm sure most other Fiskars tools are good. I should have bought one of their regular loppers. The handles of my ones twist to lock/unlock the extendable handles and that is where the problem lies.

Metal detectorists love them . I almost got one a couple of years ago, but the work struck and I had to give up detecting ...

I've not seen these before.  Very neat looking tools though and I might pick one up.

The sheath is only good for safe storage. It won't be good for a belt unless I add a D-ring and a dangler.  It rides high and wants to flip over because the handle is heavier than the blade.  It made for easy work removing grass and weeds from around my pineapples.

I've used a dirt cheap, unbranded one in the yard for years. It's a chunky slab of steel with rough wood handles but manages to get the job done.
