SAK: 2 layer with mag

I plan to bring one of my Explorers down to 2 layers,  i'm thinking keep layer 1 as two blades, layer 2 i want the mag glass but really have no need for the Phillips, is there something useful that can take the Phillips place easily? perhaps the torch or a combi tool or something ???

Long answer:
First, only the new shorter Philips can fit opposite the openers, and that’s on a 93mm SAK. So that rules out the new magnifier thanks to arithmetic, though at this point the old one might physically fit, on a 91mm SAK.

Second, and most importantly, you need to use two springs.
On a 93mm SAK, I believe that it is two blade springs, one of them flipped around.
Since you can’t flip the springs around on 91mm SAKs, the outcome for this suggestion is not looking good.  :-[

The two openers would have been great but thank you pabs for explaining why it would be difficult, i don't mind making liners or adapting springs but making springs is a different kettle of fish, i will think on it but atm the easiest thing i can do is modify the Phillips into something else, thanks guys, i will think of something :tu:

It might be possible in theory, there could be the right springs, but Victorinox’s habit of having different speSmurfpillsed tangs makes it tricky.

You would need to get two springs. On one end, both of them are the same or similar enough to match. That’s where the mag glass would go, if there is enough space in a 91mm SAK to begin with if the openers are going opposite it.

If the 4th rivet is in the way, the mag glass would probably have to go on the keychain side of the SAK, the same side that it is currently located, on stock SAKs.

Back to the springs. On the opposite end of the springs, one of them has to mate with the bottle opener, the other with the can opener.


In any case, I’m interested to see what you do with the Philips. :popcorn:

Thanks Pabs, i'm not really interested in smurfing around with springs for now, will try to keep this as easy as possible, i have an idea so will gather some tools needed for the job, will post when done :tu:

Ok so i decided to give this a try as i was undecided



I think you know where this is going..



And the result..





Tested on wood and plastic with mole grips, works fine, no bends or breaks, i'm not going to reharden it (if it even needs it) as i think it will be fine for what i want it for, also i probably cant ..oh well, easier to sharpen if nothing else  :tu:
Fits snuggly with mag and nail nick in perfect position, all good..hopefully it will last but if it doesn't then lesson learnt.. now to clean it up a bit  :salute:

Let us know how it goes? Soft woods I can see being ok, but thick plastic or hard wood, I would worry about how well it held up.

For now i am not 100% confident it will hold for heavy work but i'm pretty sure it will do for me as long as its kept sharp, i'm not planning to test it to destruction but if it breaks i will just remove it and replace it with one from a 93mm, or think of something else, it's a trial so i'm perfectly happy to let you know when/if it snaps off, however to be honest i see no reason why it should, time will tell though  :salute:

All done, managed to find just enough brass rod as its just two layers, shiny new scales but would have preferred plus, i have a set of red somewhere but i wanted this mod yellow, i'm thinking my next mod will feature an inline hook  :D

Awl, mag and fluted corkscrew from a broken Champion, a liner and blades from a Climber, i know i said in my op that in was using an Explorer but this Champion came to me in a sorry state so used that instead, the Explorer can breathe again..for now  :climber:

I will of course keep you all updated on the performance of the awl and how long it lasts, i do plan to make another mod similar to this one but with an extra layer, a saw, but next time i will fashion the Awl from the Phillips, it looks doable but i'm not convinced i can cut a decent looking nail-nick, that metal is a bit of a pig to work with, will give it a go though  :salute:
