There is a government e-petition to reverse the Canada Border Service Agency decision to ban knives that open with on hand. This new ban is affecting the import of Spyderco (and other brand) knives into Canada.

This is a genuine government petition. If it gets enough signatures, it will get read in parliament.

 It can be found here:

https://petitions.ourcommons.ca/en/Petition/Details?Petition=e-1552

If you are Canadian, please sign.

Please also discuss this issue with friends and family and see if they are interested in signing too!

I imagine you have the best intention for all of us knife nuts, but your two posts on this forum have been just a link to the petition letter.
 :ahhh

I saw your post already on Spyderco forums and Bladeforums and I copied the link here so that you didn't have to come and register just to post this...did it a few days ago actually.

Good luck on that
and welcome to  :MTO:

posted this on the other thread but it has more to do with knives than multi tools, so...

Old thread, I know.  However, I've been searching Edged Tools for a bit now and am trying to find out what is the disposition of this issue?

Driving up to PEI tomorrow for a long weekend and would like not to offend or be accosted.  If anyone knows, please share.

Thanks

Hopefully some of our Canadian members will weigh in, but I did find this:

Looks like they are using the infamous wrist flick test to determine if a folding knife is a prohibited “centrifugal knife”.

Should be safe with a vic Huntsman and a Leatherman Rebar, then.  I'll be leaving the Spyderco at home, I guess.  A shame, too.  I'll be right on the coast and some fishing and frying might be nice

If you want a OHO knife that they can’t do that test on, grab a Case Russlock. There isn’t enough blade sticking out for them to grab even with pliers as they have been known to do in NYC. It takes a bit of practice but after you get it down it is easy to OHO.

My Russlock was my knife as we traveled through NYC.

You can see the Russlock in the middle. It is circled in red. It is very stiff and not flickable at all. It takes a deliberate rolling motion to open it.

Since I got the motion down, I actually prefer the Russlock to a lot of easier/modern OHO mechanisms. I carry it often as a backup if I'm using a larger tool with a less accessible knife like a Rebar.

If you wanted a larger knife, fixed blades seem OK as long as they aren’t push knives.  I’m not sure I would walk around town with one on my belt, but I doubt anyone would question it while out fishing.

One of the larger Opinels might be a good option too.  Unless very worn, no one is going to be able to wrist flick one open.  And if by chance you did lose it, well, you aren’t out much money.

Got a little confused here given the original date of the first post was 2018 and the last was 2024 but since it was only yesterday let me opine.

From what I can recall, I'm not convinced this ever hit the one hand opening knives all that hard.  I can still buy all manner of one handed openers, Spyderco included, locally and via the web and have them shipped here and to my knowledge they aren't really restricted.

Not surprisingly most urban environments don't take too well to people carrying tools, er, weapons, er, knives on their person.  I'm old enough to have carried a knife (predominantly a SAK) for over 50 years.  It's not a weapon in my mind, rather a tool and I've helped all manner of people do things with various implements.  In smaller communities with agricultural or fishery type businesses, I'd expect very little pushback from anyone.  PEI outside of Charlottetown likely nobody says a thing.  Halifax, maybe?  Montreal/Quebec City/Ottawa/Toronto, probably best to not have anything visible.

That said it certainly impacted assisted opening knives crossing the border.  In my case my preference is Benchmade assisted opening knives and U.S. models that open easily are probably likely to be prevented from delivery by Canada Border Services.  At the same time, you can buy most models that Benchmade makes, including all that I own, at the local Cabelas.  They tend to screw them down pretty tight so they cannot be easily opened with the thumb stud, but that's not that hard to adjust.

On the Spyderco side I own a number of those as well and have never had an issue carrying one in a pocket.  People might get scared in an urban environment but otherwise, nah, most will recognize it for what it is, a tool.

The whole ban seems like an England wannabe movement started by some dumbass politician somewhere.

Huntsman and Rebar?  100% ok, so long as you don't whip it out at the bank machine or in front of a coffee store employee.  And why would you?

Feel free to ask more specifics if you want and I'll do my best to reply.
