The scale, on the Phillips side were cracked and missing a little part (tweezer slot). And the scales were also exposed to some heat. Otherwise this ol’ champion “b” is mint. I have a set of older solid scales coming from the UK. This knife will be back in shape soon.

Well, today I received my new, to me, solid SAK scales. They are not exactly the type I needed since they do not sport the hole required to insert the 2.5mm silver/Nickle pin; which, acts to retain the bail in place. They do have the three recessed openings to “snap” onto the brass bushing normally found on 91mm SAK models.

Marc, if you're careful you can cut a slot for the pin on those scales.  I did one on an old sak of mine (given away now) and it wasn't too difficult.  :salute:

I have decided to fill the two recessed openings associated with the Bail/Nickle-silver pin mechanism. This to hopefully provide a stronger surface and minimise the potential for “cracking” in the future. I will use a product that I currently have in stock; but, first I will test the epoxy, on the damaged scales, for adhesion, strength and for its ability to be drilled once cured.

Mags, sorry I missed your post while taking photographs... as you can now see, I will attempt to fill the two associated recesses in order to provide a solid base to drill into. And YES I will be very careful. I am now building a “jig” to mount the scale onto the fixed chuck on my watchmaker’s lathe and will slowly drill through the scale.

No worries Marc. I actually meant you can cut a slot for the straight pin to fit into by the corkscrew recess. 

Can't wait to see this project come to fruition though.   :salute:

I shall now go for a nice hot meal (that’s thinking of you Mechy) then practice my, long ago acquired, peening skills on a couple of donor Nickle-silver pins. For this project to be successful the peening has to be ecstatically perfect; since the peened heads will show much like a 93mm Alox. So, a small hammer, solid base, steady hands, clear vision and some buffing at the end. :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh

I’ve completed my epoxy experiment. Overall it performed as expected. The epoxy cured in 24 hours as instructed, even at the “bottom” of the recess. The sanding was straight forward but time consuming since I applied far too much. Lesson one. Drilling the epoxy through to the other side was as expected using a 0.0935” (3/32) or 2.4 mm.


Note: I drilled free hand for the experiment; since, I was not concerned with accuracy of location. I was mostly testing the epoxy’s ability to be drilled and retain structural integrity.

I am also satisfied with the results obtained on the “outside” of the scale material. There is no cracking of the edges or otherwise anymore flaking then the original factory hole. Again this was done free hand without any holding devices or sacrificial back plate. When proceeding to the next phase, namely the application of epoxy to the replacement scales, the scale material will be secure to a bench lathe “fixed chuck” sandwiched between two pieces of sacrificial material (hard wood flat shims). This to ensure that the hole location is correct and to protect the exposed surfaces.
