Fake or Real Tread? (GLs Front Page Review)
on: March 08, 2018, 10:39:21 PM
Apologies if this is elsewhere, but it looked like a freshly posted article, and I couldn't find any other way to comment?

It seems that the knock-off factories are getting pretty good - which is not necessarily a bad thing?
It's a bit like online stores reminding big department stores that they need to update, improve, and stay relevant to compete.

Obviously I don't support it - R&D is expensive, and releasing a new product is risky, and it's not fair (or right) to let someone else do all of that, wait until they have a successful product, and then copy it. Which is probably why we have rules for patents, and why counterfeiters (and anyone importing them) are heavily penalised.

Onto the item - I'd like to see you run the tools (such as they are) through use

if the fake (or even the genuine) Tread tool components turn to putty the moment you try to use them, that is a very real indicator of the quality, beyond their ability to create something cosmetically identical....

There's another thread further down that includes the article. I posted both today but I'm just as happy to have this here too.  :D

The point is, while I don't condone buying fakes I would rather people know what they are buying. The guy who buys fakes for $50 then passes them off for real ones and charges $150 for them is much worse than the people who sell the copies for $50 In the first place.

I fully intend to try and use them some more.  The worst part is that I've been wearing the fake for a few months now and haven't really found a job that it could do or was good at, and that has more to do with the overall uselessness of the concept than it does any shortcomings of the knockoff.

If you are interested, here is a link to the other thread, started when I got the fake initially.

I spotted this today. Probably fake, as Leatherman is not mentioned anywhere. https://store.ringtoperfection.com/products/29-in-1-stainless-steel-multi-functional-campers-bracelet

Actually I don't think so. I am pretty sure the screws in my left ankle are Robertson ones, although I'm not sure what's on the right.

And my bicycle is away for the season.

I saw an ad for a fake Tread on Instagram the other day so I left the message "You know @Leatherman patented these, right?"

I think my favourite review from the knock-off site listed above (knock off I suppose in this instance because they're not calling it Leatherman, and it doesn't have the logo imprinted on it. Whether stealing IP is a greater or lessor crime that counterfeiting I'm not sure)

Anyway --

So you get the joy of buying a lot more stuff (extra bits, adaptor) just to do basic things that you could do with regular bits available at pretty well any corner or hardware store with any other brand?  :D

A little derailment. I got some pretty fancy commercials for this obviously fake LM tread on instagram today.
(You can even see it says leatherman on it in some of the pics )
They claim it is their own tool though...
