Aid me in Identifying this 58mm
on: March 06, 2018, 10:58:11 PM
Hey everyone.  I stumbled across this little guy recently and I was curious if maybe anyone here could give me a better idea of what it is classified as and its approximate age.  After reviewing most of the wonder collection of information here I came to the conclusion its either an Alox Companion or 58mm Executive. According to Ulli's terrific Victorinox tang stamps compilation It seems to have Vc6 and vssr1 tang stamps dating it between 1952-1970.  I started getting a bit lost in dating the type of scissor and nail file. I took a *few photos along side other 58mm classics to compare up close. Looking forward to any responses =).  Thanks all. https://imgur.com/a/8LgUZ

Someone better at this than me may come along and correct me.

No Ensign.
I'd say 58mm Executive is correct. Nice little knife in great condition!

If it's an executive, where's the orange peeler?

Maybe a one-off mod?
Don't get too serious, just enough will do.

Hum... is it?

According to Wiki:
This knife was made with Alox scales. It is only available in red.

Also, the file seems a bit off. Can we see a better/closer pic of it?

Just checked the Wiki. Is the file like this:

It might be the light on the pic that made it look weird.

The thing is, an Ensign should be stainless. IMHO it is closer to an Executive since only the color differs.
I'll change the Wiki later tonight ;)

Also, the Ensign doesn't have exposed rivets. Could it be that the red alox just got "scraped" away from use, like it happens to some other ribbed Alox? I remember seeing Pioneers with faded red, showing lots of white...

If so, maybe the "only available in red" is still true.

Maybe. But according to the wiki they also exist with silver scales ;)

I tried some different lighting, still hard to tell in the photos however it seems to have the same file pattern as that image.  Thanks so much for the informative responses everyone.  Great community you all have made here.  :salute:

Reinier is absolutely correct, it's an Executive 58. The only difference with Companion 58 - type of nail-file
