Pin spanner for knife pivots?

I'd like to do a little tweaking on my Vagnino Zipslip, but don't have any tooling for undoing the pivot. Does anyone know if there's tooling available for unscrewing pivots like this? The pivot is the same on front and rear, and both are recessed, so there's no other way to drive it.

Thanks Steve  That's perfect!

Unfortunately the shipping costs are OBSCENE so I might have a go at making something myself. Thanks again mate  :salute:

You are welcome to them if they will help,
Do you know what the internal measurement is?

Some excellent ideas here, guys   :like:

The circlip pliers is an interesting idea, but it would need some really fine ones - finer than I've ever seen/used.

Tony, the hex bits are a wicked idea. I'll try and get some measurements of Dia and PCD, and let you know  :tu:

This is insanely difficult to measure with a manual metric vernier caliper and dodgy eyesight  ::) but it appears to be imperial sizing.

At best guess, I'd say the pins need to be 1/64" in diameter, on a 3/16" PCD - or effectively 7/32" across the outside of the pins, and 5/32" inside.

I'm wondering if I might be better just using a small piece of steel as a mandrel, drilling a couple of holes through at as near the correct spacing as I can, and then just dropping a couple of blunted panel pins through. They'll automatically seat at the correct depth, and will be hard enough and tough enough to not shear, whereas a modified screwdriver/bit might not have enough integrity when reduced to such a small section - particularly if these have been loctited in. I don't want to put heat on it, as apparently there's a ball race on the pivot.

It's certainly the easiest  :D if it doesn't quite work, all I have to do is drill a couple more holes  :P i'll start having a rummage for materials and tiny drill bits over the next few days

Sometimes I can be really thick! I usually get there in the end though...

I was staring at it thinking "It's a shame there isn't some way to finely adjust the distance between two narrow diameter pins, something like...."

I'll not be using those, as they're my good sets, but I might have some old compasses kicking around somewhere, or buy a couple of cheap dividers off the bay

Agreed!  :tu:

It's the right type of thing, but no guarantee that the dimensions would be a match.

Here we go...
Al, I reckon the two screwdriver bits can be filed down to fit but...

I have a simple but cunning plan, the two black bits at the bottom are out of a watch tool, 1.8mm at the end, if not close enough just spin them down in a drill  :tu:
Then they are too fat so , grind a flat on each one until the PCD (I had to look that up  ;) ) is correct then weld on to an old screwdriver

I'm happy to pop them in to the post for you Mate  :D :D :D

Everything’s adjustable

Sorry Tony. Didn't see your latest reply till now (not as good at keeping up with the forum as I used to be). I don't have any welding tackle here, and wouldn't trust myself with one if I did at the minute. I think an old pair of compasses, with ground down panel pins, clamped solid in one of the engineer vices that you gave me, would do the job just fine. Life has been throwing a few other things at me lately, so this has gone on the back burner for a while, but I think the compass trick is going to be by far the easiest way of setting the PCD (Pitch circle diameter that the holes are drilled on - apologies for earlier confusion)

The secondary complication is that the holes do not appear to be as precise/uniform as they should be, and a fixed pin spanner would probably not fit in each pairing. That's one of the reasons I preferred the adjustable solution. The adjustable pin spanners we had at work, were for a 1" (25mm) to 8" (203mm) P.C.D. and so way too big for this application. The easiest way of describing them, would be an unsprung pair of dividers, with pins mounted at 90o to the arms. That's what led me to the compasses idea.
