Stock Leatherman Sheath mod
on: March 11, 2018, 06:52:44 AM
i'm sure a lot of people would agree that the stock leatherman leather sheaths could be better..
for me, I like them except for the back. they make them so you can wear them vertical or horizontal and that leaves a thin strip of leather supporting your belt.
for smaller tools it isn't so much of an issue, but for the big boys like the Surge it's only a matter of time that it will wear thin and break.
just when the rest of the sheath gets that nice worn-in lock that I like.. it's time for a new one.
so one day I was at work and got the idea to use some material I had on hand and try to reinforce my old retired sheath.
I got some leather glue (looks like regular white glue that dries clear but works awesome) and the material I used to reinforce you will not believe...
I had a stack of vinyl plank flooring infront of me and I looked at the back side and I thought.. lets give it a shot.
I cut a piece to shape, sanded the top side of the flooring with electric sander and hand sanded the back side of the sheath, then put a wood block in the sheath, glued both sides and clamped it with about 4 small clamps to hold it down tight.
after 2 hours I removed the clamps and it is fused together better than I expected. I was going to use some rivets but no need. ive been wearing them like this for over a month and they look like the day I glued them. they even kept the contours.
I also dislike how the snaps are painted black that scratches off and looks rough in no time, so I replaced all of mine with brass snaps. now I expect my sheaths to last for years longer.

good!  :like:
Nylon and newer sheaths do have durability issues but the good old thick ones hold up with their thicker belt loop, and this one reminds me of those   :salute:
