Wave 'lefty swap'?
on: March 11, 2018, 06:49:56 PM
Is there anything preventing someone from switching the positions of the OHO tools on a Wave, so the blades are OHO for lefty users? It looks to me like the stock of the metal is not the same thickness for file/saw and the blades, but it also looks like the tool bays are wide enough and assuming the overall thickness doesn't change, I can't imagine why this wouldn't work.

But at the same time, I'm not tearing my Wave apart to try.

Anyone have first hand knowledge of whether this would work?

I DO understand that the blade retention detent isn't on both sides of the blade. But otherwise, shouldn't it work?

See the part that the back of the blade meets the liner lock, it's a little slopped. If you switch over the left and right tool, the slopes may prevent the tools from locking up properly.

Also, the opening for the oho are different. There's not enough clearance to access thumb hole on the blade if you were to switch it over for a lefty.

So, it would require grinding the back of the blade level, which would mean there would be a little play in the blade when locked open, and taking a dremel to the handle to increase the size of the openings in the scales for access to the thumb holes in the blades. And I guess drilling little detent holes in the blades to hold the blades in closed position.

Increasing the size of the openings in the scales, and putting new detents in the blades don't bother me a bit. I'm not super keen on less secure blade lock-up.

Now I need to think about this for a bit. Which usually leads to 'nothing ever comes of it'.

Hey but that's the fun part of modifications. You can do Lynn!

Glue or jb weld etc a little L shaped piece of metal to the backstop or blade to take up the slack for regrinding the face for the liner lock.

What is this magical product?

It's a two-part epoxy.

So it only dries when combined?

Pretty much  One part glue and one part hardener :tu: When mixed it starts a chemical reaction that puts off heat and starts hardening the glue and it gets very hard pretty quickly :ahhh :D Really good stuff and like most epoxies, pretty smelly :D

I partially did it. I put the file and saw in the knife spots, but then put scissors and a pry tool in the two vacant spots for a knifeless version. I got the lock up OK on the saw and file, going slow with a diamond file.
