Playmobil with traditional Greek costumes
on: March 13, 2018, 09:54:54 PM
From a current exhibition in our Historical Museum.
You see, Foustanella isn't the only costume that was used.

I loved the pictures and thought I could share.

That was usual during the 18th and 19th century around Europe, particularly for people that could be thrown away from their land by their overlords, Ottomans in the Balcan  peninsula. They could sell some gold in their destination to start over. Jews did the same thing with diamonds and other gems in the Central Europe. Gold was in the form of official coins, ready to be exchanged for goods.

That makes a lot of sense. I always wondered about all the jewelry myself.

You may see here how they wore the golden coins ("flouria", name coming from the "florin" coin of Florence, now Italy).

These costums were the official ones, used during holidays, marriages and such festivities. Eceryday costumes were much simpler and practical.

They were using two types of legs element for a Greek costume. The Vraka, shown above, a kind of comfy baggy trousers (the same Zouaves used), worn mainly in Crete and most islands and the Foustanella, similar to a Kilt, worn mainly in the mainland. Women wore long dresses and everybody used some type of sun shade, it's easy to understand why.

I love those Playmobils! Everything is made by a 19 year old (!!!), Petros Kaminiotis.

This is the first royal couple of Greece, Otto (from Bavaria) and Amelia.

Beautiful KK - thanks for sharing those. He's put so much work into them! They are gorgeous and the costumes elevate an already cool toy to a completely new level.

These are so cool!
Just one guy makes them? I thought Playmobil was running some special series of traditional figures around the world. They could. It would be awesome, judging from how cool these look.
