What if?
on: November 13, 2008, 07:46:03 PM
What if you could get a Sak with a higher quality knife blade, say in D2 blade or a similar real world steel, on a custom Sak basis???

What model/size sak would like to see it mounted on, and what would you be prepare to pay for it ???

And would you like more exotic scales too ???

It seems to me the only real issue with Sak's is the blades relative lack of edge retention, which can be an issue if you've got a day of heavy cutting ahead, with no means/time to touch up the blade :-\

I know Vic/Wenger aren't interested in pursuing the idea, but I think it'd be a great addition to an already awesome tool :)

What do you guy's think ???

Definately the OH Series :tu:

And some condemned for a fault alone." -William Shakespeare, King Lear (1608), Act IV, scene 6, line 169

OHT or Farmer.  :tu:

I'd pay $100 for an OHT but would then have to send it to Scibeer for a Micarta/clip upgrade.

midnite manager with Predators tool-set up & materials.

i donno....perhaps Swissgrip with some BIT better blade material, which wouldnt raise the price more than 20-30 percent.no damascus or any other "just for profit" materials for me.its gotta be better to be used, not for looks.

I'd take a bantam (normal blade + combo tool) in old fashioned stainable steel, like Case's CV steel. Then i'd slap some traditional slipjoint style on it- shiny bolsters and olive green micarta (or maybe bone) scales. I'd spend ~50 bucks.

I would consider it in a "specialty series" or an option like you said
but I don't think I'd care for it in my everyday SAK. Because of the
price, the possible corrosion issue with different steel blends and if I lost it! :ahhh

They "last" great the way they are and I like sharpening. I can customize it myself or
have someone else do it. Long live SAK (and they do!) ;)

In theory there's no limit to what a custom maker can make, but surely a 91/85 is the more likely option, should a modder come along to offer that service :)

I think it would be a cracking idea.  :)

Although I'd like to see a good OH model, it would also be nice to have an ALOX model with a nice blade steel.  A Farmer with D2 would be great!    Would also be legal EDC as well.

Not sure about the cost TBH.   Entirely depends on the steel and the SAK model.

Dude, I have a Sebbie, clearly I have no limit.  :D

It's difficult as I have no real idea of cost, but going on Bill's Farmer I'd say $90. That would include say $30 for the blade.

+1 Vic OHT line or Wenger OH ranger line. Would pay 80 to 100 dollars, especially if they change to a tougher scales like some kind of metal.

I would like to see the Alox range done, Farmer, Pioneer etc.  But I would love to have brass bolsters with antler, bone or wood scales.  For that I would happily pay £50.

Handle materiel is least of importance for me. I like the (eco type) nylon handles on my OHT. I'd rather concentrate on the blade design and quality + tool selection rather than paying twice more just cuz of prettier handles. They are there for grip. I haven't had a chance yet to handle the 120mm Wenger ranger line, but from the comparison pics next to OHT (which is big) it looks huge so I'd rather stay with vic 111mm platform.

How about a Wenger NewRanger with improved steel?

What he said.

This also gives the option of one-hand opening on some of the New Rangers that don't have it.
I'm thinking a New Ranger Touring 174 with a nice blade and you might as well put one of those
awesome Ranger wood saws in there while you're at it.

I know that's gonna be pricy.

I'd be happy to have a 440-C blade,on the 91/111 knives,with the 91s getting the Scagel treatment.

Any mid-sized or larger SAK would do, including plier-type SAKs. Given the size of the knife blade on these models, I wouldn't go for more than a $20-$30 increase in the final price.

Maybe the Alox range , Soldier , Farmer etc. with a S30V blade  . But I'm not super keen as I like the soft SAK steel , often carried often used often sharpened  :D
