Tourist aging help
on: March 16, 2018, 11:27:16 PM
Just picked up this Tourist and noticed something kind of interesting about it. It has a small clip point blade, but a 4 turn corkscrew. I’ve read the four turn corkscrew didn’t appear until ‘83, but the small clip point was out before ‘73. Are these facts different for 84mm models? The  cap lifter doesn’t have the 90 degree stop nor the  wire stripper. I don’t think it was modded in any way because it was in rough shape when I received. Any help with how old it is, is much appreciated. Thanks.

Maybe the shorter frame of the 84mm necessitated only a 4-turn corkscrew?

Sorry that this is only speculation on my part, and i can't be more helpful.

Yeah that’s what I was thinking, but can’t find anything to support that theory.

Hmm...

Well, this linked blog post clearly shows an older Tourist with a 5-turn corkscrew, but it's VERY old, with pins through the scales. So...

Then, the one linked below looks like a 4-turn.

AFAIK, 84mm and 91mm back tools are the same length so it's unlikely that they needed a short corkscrew on the smaller knives.  Can't really help with the date but I would recommend you have look through the threads here: https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,75774.0.html and in particular this one: https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,51872.0.html (though that's mostly for 91mm knives)

4-turn corckscrew was introduced in 1973 but they used also for some years later a lot of 5-turn corcksrews (and clip point small blades too) made before 1973.

Got one like that, don't exactly know from what year. It's been restored, I'll try to get newer pics.

Yup. Yup jnoxyd

I don't know where anyone got the idea about the 5-turn going til '73, but have seen it as well.

Thanks everyone on this info. Really appreciate it. I got the idea from a website that shows the years changes were made to different tools. I have also seen YouTube SAK reviewers discuss that as well.
