Mrs Nix requested some goulash fo tonight's dinner. Who am I to complain?   :dunno:

For the stew meat, I used some rib roast (on sale at the butcher's counter) and cubed it up:

That got dredged in a little flour, salt, and pepper. Then the meat got browed in some hot oil:

This was done in batches to keep the pan and oil hot.  :tu:

After the meat got browned, onions and garlic went into the pan. Then a lot of paprika, some more paprika, and some ground caraway seeds. Once that was all smelling fantastic, I added some pureed tomatoes......

OK, just like in Chili, adding tomatoes is a point of controversy. I personally would not do this, but Mrs Nix's mother made her goulash with tomatoes, and now Mrs Nix likes it that way. So in went the tomatoes.

It's all simmering away....dinner is 3 hours away.....should be time for everything to get happy and tender. I can barely wait....

we often add a bit of tomato paste so it probably has some variation. one you might like if szekely goulash or how ever it is written properly. sour kraut and meat

Here's the goulash as served over a bed of rice:

Mrs Nix loved it, "This is the best thing ever."  I think it may have turned out better than her Mom's version.   ;)

Oh, I added some extra chile flakes to mine.  :D

Hey Nix quick question,
Well maybe anyone,
When making rice, can you just dump dry rice into say tomoato soup or a chili to get more flavor or do you have to boil the rice before adding?

Absolutely.   :tu:

Several dishes like jambalaya, Hoppin' John, and paella do that.

Might take a little longer than usual for the rice to cook through. And 1 cup of rice will soak up around a cup of liquid, so be sure you have enough sauce.   :tu:

Gotcha, my chili’s like dog food so it wouldn’t work for this setup, I’d have to cook the rice before adding. But I wanna make something like you made sooner or later..
