Preparations for multitool cooking
on: March 18, 2018, 11:21:26 PM
I try to have some side projects from time to time. Try new things, learn new stuff, expand my horizons, and of course find new and unexpected ways to mess up everything.

The goal is to do some extreme and radical multitool modding. The end goal is not near at all yet, so I thought I'd start with the preparations instead. That starts with baking.

Expressing a newfound interest in baking I gained access to some ingredients and suitable equipment. I assume fiber is good so I grabbed mostly fibery stuff, then some yeast, water, flour and some sugar for some hopefully crisp surfaces.

From there I'd mix it up, let the yeast do its thing, and then slab it over into a kettle.

Put in oven for just over an hour to get that bread feel.

I cut it down to size with Nix very generous gift which I use for pretty much everything as a test these days. Then forming an optimistic shape in the bread like substance. Finally putting on a lid as I want to limit oxygen access.

Then put back into another oven for a few hours.

Perfectly crispy  :D

Sadly the shape didn't keep up at all. Likely needs more compressed doe and less air. Anyway, making shaped coal isn't really what this is about so maybe another project sometime to figure that one out.

The actual pieces are very nice though - hard, airy and clean. Should isolate very well I imagine.

It looks like I will need some more of it though. I might cheat and use store bought stuff for the fill up.

Oh, and it turns out I've given the kettle a special ops treatment for tactical cooking too!  :D That is not dirt - it is actual browned metal. It also turned out that this "thick bottomed" kettle was thick bottomed because they had glued some extra on the bottom.. Now it is a thin bottomed kettle again.

So far so good I guess.

Anybody has any experience or tips for removing smoke damages to buildings? (Told you I'd mess up somehow...  :ahhh )

I admit that bready thing actually tasted well enough that it was a shame coaling it. Maybe I actually know how to bake, or it was a lucky shot? Too bad I didn't write down what I did then..

The resulting coal bits were quite good, just not enough of them. Anyway, I'll just fill up with some normal non-airy coal - I can't really smoke the oven building twice. Or at least hang up some fish and meat if I do :D

I forgot that part? Hm, seems like I did.

Basically I aimed to make a small insulated crucible holder from a kettle and some bread like dough. The general idea being that a dough with plenty of fibers should end up as nice and airy clumps of mostly carbon and function as refractory material. If it works it might slowly gas away as CO2 in use - or not. Or just burn like coal.. Time will tell. It is very clean to touch so not very coal like that way at least.

Either way the next step is dropping in those excuses for multi-tools and bring them to a nice melt. That step requires more serious preparation as melting steel is no joke.

It isn't as far fetched as it might seem at first. I saw someone turn loaf into a melting oven on youtube, so this is just a variation of the theme. I wont use gas though, and steel and aluminium are two very different beasts to melt.

Interesting channel overall - at least for some of us. Might still prove too inspiring though! :D
