Rescue Tool in real life
on: November 14, 2008, 07:02:12 AM
After reading so much about it here and on sosak it seems like a great tool for a friend of mine who is currently a paramedic with the FDNY (possibly firefighter soon). His Birthday is in late January and I was thinking of getting him one. Before doing so I'd like to know if there are any rescue service personnel who ether carry it or have had experience with it and what are your thoughts. The best thing to do I guess it to give it to him a bit early and see what his real life review would provide. Any feedback is greatly appreciated and I thank you in advance. Oh and btw black or stayglow?

I have no experience whatsoever with the tool or rescue situations, but with regards to colour, it has to be the yellow IMO.  Purely for extra visability.

I'd say it depends all on the guy you're giving it too. Some people like the yellow for the thematic thing, but GOD the sheath is ugleh.

Others like the whole tactical black thing. 8)

Just check his equipment or something. You should be able to tell. XD

I'm leaning more towards the black really for lower profile. I don't know the regulations for FDNY ems personnel. Asking him will ruin the surprise, and I don't know anyone else in the system to ask.

Heh I'd definitely get the stayglow for my collection, but unsure what he might need/like/require.

Yes, but he leaves the Rescue Tool in the truck so it doesn't get dirty or lost under a flaming cow truck!   :pok:

Firefighters are usually limited to the equipment they carry on the engine for liability purposes, aa it's designed to do a specific job. When not fully bunkered out in firefighting gear a good knife that one can carry in a pocket, not a sheath or pouch in my opinion is more useful and easier to get at when needed at a moments notice. You are not going to have a pocket full of change, car keys, etc when on duty so getting at a knife in a pocket is not a chore, and it can be removed when putting bunker gear on. One question that needs to be considered is a large main blade ( a OH VIC  or a Spyderco would be my choice ) with a plain edge or a serrated edge,  I prefer a plain edge and carried one as a fire fighter. You don't to carry a knife or tool in your bunker gear pocket because in a hot fire it may melt or burst into flames because of extreme heat. Keep it simple.

Why do I carry a 45 ?
Because they don't make a 46 !

Thx guys for the input and suggestions (keep em coming). He was at my place today and we spoke about gear he carries, and some of the calls he had. I'm still inclined on getting him the Rescue Tool. He shared with me this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sao-uEKgJ6Q I couldn't stop laughing. Enjoy.

Rodion thx for bringing up the Gerber.

Ha! That video is hilarious.

So, does he seem to lean toward a more tactical black kinda thing or a serious EMT thing? :D

I haven't asked him, supposed to be a surprise. We just talked about different gear he uses, and primarily gear he keeps on him at work. Surprisingly he rarely caries his shears on him these days due to majority of his calls being medical and not trauma.

I use the swisstool Rs daily as a mechanic and retained firefighter and find it very  handy all the time. I think the rescue tool could be good in rescue situations with it's window breaker and easy open blade, but it might not get used as regularily in daily life as a swisstool.

Thanks for your advise. I do like the swisstool, and the rs model would seem more appropriate, but I can imagine the look on a patients face when he whips it out to cut the seat belt of or something of that nature. A rescue tool would be more used I believe partly due to it's size and OH knife format.

I recall reading a thread on the Spyderco forums about a month ago where an individual was asking about the viability of the Byrd line (Spyderco's economy knife brand) as a rescue blade. He wasn't looking for a personal purchase, but rather to purchase them in bulk. Apparently his squad is prohibited from carrying personal blades because whoever was taking care of their gear's cleaning found that a cheapo knife has fallen into the opened (and locked) position while in the wash. He lodged a complaint, and now the firefighter in question is looking to procure knives that he and his squadmates can actually carry. Sorry for the long winded post, but you may want to make sure that your friend's allowed to carry his own knife, rather than an issued one. It might not be an issue, but who knows?

Of course, you could stil get him the RescueTool for him to carry off duty. It seems that EMT's and Fireman are always called upon to help those in need when they least expect it. The RescueTool might give him that, no pun intended here, the edge he needs to make a difference when he least expects it. I drive a truck for a living and EDC one myself. I carry mine mostly to get myself out of a bad moment. Fortunatley, I have not had to use it for that. I have played with the punch at a junkyard and cut jammed up ratchet straps. Both of the blades and tthe punch work as advertised.

I think that you are doing a nice thing for your friend.

Personally I feel that Victorinox designed the RescueTool as a last ditch or "All you Have on Hand Tool", something to be kept close at hand and used in an Off-Duty rescue, one of those moments when someone who is trained for such events does not have they time available to wait for the proper equipment to arrive.

***UPDATE***

Rescue Tool spotted in the hands of a FDNY paramedic!!!

pics to follow (later tonight)

His first reaction was to open the main blade and say WOW, a few more wows followed once he saw the rest of the implements and as I explained what each can do. He has it on his belt now (red/yellow sheath and all) and will follow up with me if it ever gets used.
