Oil/lubricant
on: March 23, 2018, 03:44:01 PM
I currently use either Daiwa reel oil (yes, I am an angler and use the oil I use for my reels) or just pure fine high grade swedish sewing machine oil. Haven't noticed a difference in result when used on my knives and MT's. I heard that nano oil is the sh*t, but is it really that much better than anything else? The only difference I can tell between sewing machine oil and Daiwa reel oil is that the Daiwa oil is a little bit thinner and get's between layers a little bit easier, otherwise it feels identical in action after application.

I started using nano oil a while ago after it was recommended on here and it's good stuff.  The surge that lives in my car just gets a regular all over bath with WD40 though, and it's always been fine.

I say use what ever you feel works for you. If it works on on your fishing reels then it should be good for your multi's or sak's

Is mineral oil the same as paraffin oil?

I use baby oil from the pharmacy, it’s usually pure enough mineral oil, but check the label.

You beat me to it!   :ahhh

Uncle Def's INFINITY SERIES multitool oil is not for the faint of heart though.... you really should start with a lesser oil and work your way up to INFINITY SERIES, otherwise you may spill a drop of two and never stop sliding as the planet rotates under you.   :ahhh

To answer the OP. I finally broke down and bought some nano-oil as I had a sneaky suspicion I was never going to win the giveaway , but you still have time to put your name down if you want to try and win some oil for free'z

Also use Mineral oil, works great and is good safe which is important to me for my traditional knives.

They both work fine.

Yes (There are different grades)

I use mineral oil on most things, (I also use it on my chopping boards) You can find it in 'farmers shops' as medicinal liquid paraffin used to treat animals

Everything’s adjustable

Back in the days I started with some oil my mum had for her sewing machine.
Until a friend introduced me to Ballstol.
His father was a forest warden and used it for all his knifes and tools.

It's food safe and I like the smell  :D

Anyhow, my Leatherman Supertool survived 15-20 years stored in my cars with only a yearly wipe-off of it.
It seems to penetrate the tiniest gaps quite well.
And it doesn't built up resin.

I'm still using it today.

Excellent, we have "medical grade" paraffin oil at our pharmacies, the pet stuff is non prescription, but for some reason the human stuff is prescription.

The main question is whether you will be contaminating food with the lubricant - if you will be oiling the pivot or the blade of a knife you will use for cutting food then use a food-safe oil, like the victorinox oil.

I use 3in1, victorinox, nano (won), parafin etc. depending on the application and what is at hand

Grant,
You mentioned Graphite powder...
I have some micro fine graphite powder for padlocks and door locks, basically normal maintenance of my buildings. My question to you is, how and where do you apply the graphite powder on a SAK for example... the slip joints obviously, how about the springs? Please tell me more.

Oh yeah! And one more thing, am I going to look like a coal miner at the end of his shift when using this stuff?

for my SAKs I use an oil that's used for door hardware and locks. it's thin and penetrates well, great for extreme cold and hot temperatures and doesn't leave residue.
my MT's I usually just use WD40.

I personally would not recommend graphite power.  I used it and its messy and IMO sucked.  I'm not sure my one opinion should prevent you from using it but I certainly wouldn't use it again.

I 2nd that against graphite powder. not just on the tools but also locks around your building.
I used to work as sort of a lock smith, servicing hotel door locks. and the way we used to "refurbish" most lock cases was opening them up and cleaning out all the grease, graphite and sticky oils that people put in them. we soaked them in alcohol, wipe them down and put them back together and they work like new!
none of my SAKs had oil on them when I bought them? and I think just like locks and door hardware, they probably work best with very little or none at all. its less likely to collect dirt.

Think about it, we raise chickens, cows, pigs for?

Next time you change the oil on your car, assuming you're using a synthetic like Mobil One, save a bit of the fresh oil. It's great on tools.

Lots of carcinogens in used motor oil...just saying   ::)

You can get a 16 ounce bottle of Mineral oil for less than $5
