Fools of April Buck 110 challenge
on: March 23, 2018, 04:36:34 PM
Some people think it can't be done. Some people think we'd be foolish to try. Some people think we're just plain crazy. Some people think the chiropractors are going to get rich off this......

But we few, we brave, we dedicated, we foolish are going to try to carry a Buck 110 for 30 days straight. This is the...

Here are the rules I propose for this first-ever Buck 110 challenge:

1. Carry a Buck 110 as often as legally permissible for 30 consecutive days.
2. Post a picture from each day of carry. Pictures can be posted retroactively, but must be from the day in question.
3. Use one and only one Buck 110 for the duration of the contest. (This is to help test edge retention and ease of sharpening, there are other threads where everyone's beautiful collections are already displayed.)
4. Use the Buck 110 for as many tasks as possible. It was conceived as a hunting knife, but rose to be one of America's favorite folders. Try using it in the kitchen, for fishing, in the garden and the garage, for EDC tasks, and...yeah, hunting, if the season is open.
5. Other tools may be carried during the challenge, but if another tool get used during the challenge, participants shall post comments detailing why the Buck 110 could not do the job (We're looking for the good, the bad, and the ugly).
6. Challenge starts on 01 April (April Fool's Day  ;)) and will run through 30 April.
7. Participants will be required to finance their own chiropractic services, but we'd all appreciate learning if you needed treatment during or after this challenge and how much weight you lost carrying this 'heavy' knife for 30-days.

Who has what it takes? Who is fool enough? Who's in?  :salute:

This is no time to sit on the side-lines, Steve!

Sharpen your 110, and let's do this!  :pok:

Here is the Buck 110 I've chosen to use during the challenge:

Brass bolsters, Oak scales, and 5160 blade steel. I went with the 5160 because I figured a few guys would be using 420HC and S30V. So this will give us another data point of sorts.

I'm going to try a couple of different carry systems:

I oiled up the Buck factory sheath, which made it a bit more supple. My humble, homemade, open-top sheath is tried and true. And I'll give pocket carry a go with the pocket caddy I made for the SAK 111mm challenge. Without some kind of support, I find pocket carry--front pocket carry--to be a nuisance. Let's see if a caddy will help that situation.  :tu:

Nix,
I am all for using the 110 for my only cutting tool, but am not keen on having to explain why my 110 couldn't turn a flat head screw. :D

I actually know what you meant. I don't think there are any cutting tasks the 110 cannot handle (handle..hehe) within reason.

I am in, but take it easy on me. I tend to forget things sometimes (o.k. often ). :D

Lastly! What be the prestigious fruit of our labors in this most enthralling 30-day adventure? I assume it is prestige, but hoping one of the mods will create a badge for it. :tu:

My hope, too.  :tu:

(And, hey, my 'rules' were only 'proposed'. I plan on carrying either a SAK or a Leatherman for most of the challenge; you know, for Flathead screws or scissor tasks. I just think we need to talk about those times when we pull out the trusty SAK to open a can of beans and the 110 didn't seem like the optimal tool for the job.  :salute:)

Cool beans, Nix! (Pun intended). :D

I'll be carrying a LM, but will bench my explorer for the 30-day 110 challenge.

Chose a 110 for the challenge. Going to take it to work tomorrow for polishing. Tonight it gets a polished lansky edge. :tu:

zoidberg,
Wish you could join in! How bad are the prices on 110s where you're at?

This is just so out there for me I am in. I have not done a challenge in a while.

I am on a ship the first two days of the month but I think I will join this for the rest of the time with my green Paperstone 110 for some variation.

I may carry a SAK or Leatherman but wont carry or use any other folder.

Why not get another 55 and carry both, that would be the same as a 110.

I should join in honor of Nix' awesome gift.
Yet I might get some strange looks when I get back to work carrying a relatively large folder
