Thank you, zoidberg! Can't believe the challenge is coming to a close already! :ahhh I have thoroughly enjoyed this challenge for sure!

I will stay around this thread until your challenge is complete. I feel partly responsible.

Great pic gerleatherberman! :like: :tu: :tu:
Congratulations on  finishing the challenge! :tu: :tu:

Hey VICMAN,

THANK YOU!  For all of your kind words and encouragement in this Buck 110 journey!  Your enthusiasm really helped keep me excited to take pics everyday and encouraged me to use the knife as much as possible. I am sure I am not alone in that sentiment.

The 110 performed admirably to say the least. And mine is the "lesser" 420HC(I think Buck 420HC performed great). I did not have to sharpen the knife at all after putting my Lansky edge on it from the start. The few time I cut on a surface that dulled it a bit, a quick strop was all it needed to get back to where I needed it to be. I scraped, sliced, cut, carved, and chiseled with it and never felt the blade was inadequate.
I would like to know how others in this challenge feel about the Buck 420HC after 30 daya as well. :)
Pontificating particularly pious positions pertaining to polymorphic paraphernalia. G-Man.

Thank you gerleatherberman!  :D

It was my pleasure!

The Bos heat treatment on 420 HC gets the most out of the steel and makes it excel compared to other 420 steels without the same tempering.

It was easy to maintain because you stropped it as soon as it needed it and it brought the edge right back....that is the way I do with all my knives...it is easier to maintain the edge with regular touch ups than to wait until the edge is really dull and having to sharpen....it also keeps from wearing the metal down.  :tu: :tu:

I enjoyed seeing all your pictures!

DAY 30

Today was truck delivery day again so the 110's final chore for the challenge was breaking down more boxes.

Click on picture for best picture.

I would like to take a moment to thank Nix for initiating this
challenge and to thank everyone who has participated in it. :tu: :tu:

I have truly enjoyed seeing all the pictures and posts that every-
one has made.

It is really great to see the Buck 110 being recognized for being
the handy and efficient tool that it is.

It is still a valid choice as a dependable and capable daily com-
panion even after over 50 years from when it was first introduced.

It has been a lot of fun! :D

For those who have been following this thread, but
are not really familiar with the background of the
Buck 110, here is why the Buck 110 is such an im-
portant knife. It literally changed the face of the knife
industry.

I was 12 years old in the early 1960's when Buck
introduced the 110 Folding Hunter. At that time
the main US knife manufacturers were Buck, Case,
Schrade-Walden Cutlery Corporation (a division
of the Imperial Knife Associated Companies),
Kabar, Camillus, and Western. There was no such
thing as Cold Steel, Spyderco, Bench-made, Stri-
der,Chris Reeve Knives, CRKT, etc.

Most knives sold from about $2.00 to about $6.00,
(in 1963 Fed-eral minimum wage was $1.25 an hour)
so when Buck introduced knives starting at $16.00
many people said no one would buy them, but they
used 440C stainless hardened to a Rockwell hardness
of 58 to 60 RC which no one else was offering and
they offered a lifetime warranty.

The Folding Hunter was originally designed as a
knife that was solid like a fixed blade, but would
give the horseman and hunter a knife he could carry
safely when riding on horseback or in a vehicle.
There is some danger with a fixed blade, if you fall
onit regardless of the sheath design.

Buck envisioned it as a knife that would mainly be
used by hunt-ers just during hunting season each year,
but the public saw the utility of it for edc use and
it caught on rapidly and soon it was common to see a
Buck 110 on the belt of the average working man.

It became the best selling knife in the world and was
the most copied at that time. In 1964, they shipped
255 of them. In 1965, they shipped 2,500, and in 1966,
10,000, and it just kept growing from there. In the
first 13 years they sold over 2 1/4 million Buck 110's.
By 2013 over 15 million had been sold worldwide since
it was first introduced.

Buck's warranty and use of a higher grade steel raised
the bar for the other companies, and they ended up
improving their products as a result. Owning a Buck
knife meant holding a piece of quality craftsmanship
built to last.

While it was not the first lockback knife, the Buck Fold-
ing Hunter is the knife that blazed the trail for all
the other lockbacks that followed it. It is the knife
that made it popular to carry a lockback for edc.

And that is why I personally have a fondness for the
Buck 110.

Day 30:

I'm sorry I wasn't as present during the past week or so. I was having great fun out in the West, but didn't snap many pictures. My phone mostly got left in the car.

The nature of the road trip meant that I didn't need a knife much at all....a little to my surprise. But I was still glad to have the 110 on my belt for the journey.  I think you guys probably feel the same about keeping a knife--that most fundamental of tools--handy at all times.

It's the final day of my challenge, by my count, and this challenge has been a real pleasure. You guys have made it a lot of fun and submitted some great shots.  I'll keep zoidberg company for the remainder of his challenge, if only for the fun of it. At this point, I think I'd feel naked without the 110.

I continue to think that the 110, even the stock model with brass bolsters, is easy to carry. For the first half of the challenge I pocket carried it without really noticing it. And it disappears in a belt sheath. The elegance and efficiency of the 110 makes it a joy to use and look at. None of that 'tactical look', just function with flowing form. The knife is so sleek it looks like it's moving even when sitting still. The proportions of the 110 just feel right to me. The blade is small enough to carry easily, but is still capable. It seems to be up to many routine tasks, and even some bigger ones, more so than the Buck 112 Ranger. Still, it might be a fun idea to do a Buck 112 challenge as a point comparison.

Regardless, this challenge continued to reinforce my appreciation of the 110 and solidify it's position as my favorite folder.

I always try to do maintenence on stuff, so it doesn't get out of hand. It took me over an hour to originally put the Lansky edge on the 110. Stroping takes less than a minute each time . It'd probably take me half an hour to sharpen the blade if it got bad. :ahhh

Nix,
Thank you again for setting this challenge up. It was a lot of fun!

Those who participated in the thread,
I really enjoyed seeing those wonderful photos of a great knife! Lots of great uses and stories. And even those who just cheered us on. Thank you!
